Everyone ignores woman with a flat tire, but a homeless man runs out to help her
The owners of Jessie Jean’s Historic 25th Cafe in Ogden, Utah weren’t surprised when Chuck ran out to help a woman stranded in the middle of the road with a flat tire.
When co-owner Anna Davidson shared a photo of his good deed on Facebook in September, it immediately went viral.
Davidson and her husband live in an apartment upstairs from the cafe and Davidson’s husband snapped the pic when he saw cafe regular Charles “Chuck” Logan helping out. That’s partly because Chuck doesn’t get enough respect.
Shuree Michelle is the woman with the flat. She was driving through town when her tire suddenly blew in the middle of the road. But despite the fact that her car was blocking traffic, no one stopped to lend a hand. And it’s not because they didn’t see her – people had to drive around her disabled vehicle.
But Chuck came to the rescue.
“Out comes this guy and he asked if I had a spare tire and a jack,” she told Yahoo Lifestyle. “He didn’t hesitate to help — it was very sweet.”
Chuck is homeless, and despite having so little, he was the only one who decided to give his time and energy to the stranded woman that day.
Sadly, the Ogden community hasn’t always been kind to Chuck or the rest of their homeless population, although the cafe has.
The cafe owners are happy to help everyone, in fact. When the town’s large population of government IRS workers were missing paychecks during the government shutdown, the owners offered discounted specials.
Davidson told Yahoo Lifestyle:
“We have about 5,000 government workers living in Ogden so when they couldn’t work, it was traumatic. We figured, ‘If we’re going to lose our business, we may as well help people on our way out.”
But when those specials also attracted some of the homeless population, not everyone was pleased.
Of course, that didn’t stop them from offering it. Davidson’s response to the hostility:
“I was like, ‘f*** that,’” she said.
With local donations, Jessie Jean’s Historic 25th offered a $2 coffee and beignets special – to anyone who wanted it.
When the government shutdown was over, instead of removing the special from their menu, they opted to do it 7 days a week instead. In fact, they’re HOPING to attract the homeless community and they know that meeting these people will help break down stereotypes.
Customers are given the option to add a “Pay it forward” item to their bill, funding meals to be given out the following day.
“I felt like the universe was telling me to do this,” said Davidson.
Chuck even works at the cafe now. He helps out with cleaning duties in exchange for meals.
“He’s a safety net around here,” Davidson said.
Davidson captioned her original post:
“Looked out the window to see this happening. This is Chuck… he’s homeless and works his ass off helping every day in the cafe. This is ‘one of those people’ that get labeled. Ya know the ones everyone wants outta sight, outta mind. I didn’t see anyone else out helping this young lady, just Chuck… the homeless guy… thank you Chuck.” #findthekind and #kindnessmatters.
Chuck told Yahoo Lifestyle that he was “supposed” to help that day.
“Treat people as they would like to be treated, with respect,” he said, matter-of-factly.
Shuree says she gave him $10 for his troubles.
It was heartwarming to see Chuck getting lots of love when his story went viral. And Jessie Jean’s Historic 25th sounds like the kind of place we’d like to have a meal.
