When Marcus first stepped into Abi’s Cafe, he had all but given up hope. But what he did just before his first shift showed that he still cared for others.
Some people stereotype homeless people as all being greedy and the cause of society’s problems. But Marcus’s story shows what homeless people can achieve if they are given a real chance.
It all began when Marcus, who had been homeless for many years, walked into Abi’s Cafe. He initially started to ask customers and employees for money.
Instead of telling Marcus to get out of her cafe, Cesia Abigail Baires began to ask him some questions. She had seen Marcus on the block before and wanted to know what had brought him to where he was.
“So I’m like, I’m not just gonna give him a couple of dollars or food today. I want to know about him.” – Cesia Abigail Baires.
Marcus then revealed that he had had a troubled past.
He was a convicted felon. Due to his past life, no one wanted to hire him. This meant that he had ended up on the streets with no means of getting himself into a better life.
Instead of giving Marcus cash or telling him to get out of her restaurant, Cesia Abigail did something unusual. She asked Marcus if he wanted to work a few hours in her restaurant for money.
Marcus’s face brightened up. No one had given him any kind of chance for many, many years. He said yes to the offer right away.
First, Cesia Abigail gave Marcus some food so that he could regain some strength. But he did something with the food that Cesia Abigail was not expecting. He took his food outside and split it with a friend of his who was also homeless.
Then he went to the back of the cafe and started washing up dishes. It was simple work, but Marcus put a lot of effort into it.
Cesia Abigail could see that Marcus had a kind heart. His sharing of the meal proved that beyond any doubt.
So she asked Marcus if he’d like to work part-time in the cafe regularly. Marcus gladly accepted Cesia Abigail’s offer.
Marcus has never been late for a shift and never done anything less than a spectacular job.
Cesia Abigail posted her and Marcus’s story to Facebook, and it soon went viral. In fact, she soon found that she was getting more customers than ever before. Everyone wanted to tell Cesia Abigail that she had done an incredible thing in helping Marcus out.
This uplift in business could well lead to Marcus working at the cafe full time. With a little luck, Marcus will be able to find a permanent home in no time at all.
A local news team then went to interview Cesia Abigail. When their report appeared on YouTube, it soon went viral. To date, the video has received over one million views. It also has over 1,700 likes and 160 comments. People have been saying things like this:
Cesia Abigail took a risk in hiring Marcus. But she is the kind of person who knows that people should be given a chance, no matter what has happened in their past.
