Homeless puppy finds safe haven in nativity scene

Regardless of where you go, chances are you will find stray dogs. With over 200 million stray dogs worldwide, according to the World Health Organization, the stray dog population has grown to the breaking point. But have you ever thought to yourself, where do these animals sleep at night, especially when it is cold? One puppy in Brazil found a unique solution to that problem.

When the weather gets cold at the end of the year many strays seek warmth wherever they can find it. And while some businesses open their doors to give homeless dogs on the street a warm place to sleep at night, not all stray dogs are so lucky. Those that cannot find a warm place to take shelter run the risk of dying from exposure to the cold temperatures.

One puppy has it figured out

One puppy, though, took to sleeping in a nativity scene in Criciúma, Brazil around the holiday season. He would have gone unnoticed if not for a group of women who spotted him as they took the nativity scene in. As they looked on, the little puppy was spotted sleeping in the manger, lying across the baby doll that was being used to depict the baby Jesus.

It’s kind of appropriate in a way since Mary and Joseph were said to be without a place to stay at for the night and were looking for a location to take shelter in on the night that their baby, Jesus, was born. Hopefully, this little dog was able to find more permanent accommodations in a forever home.

Unlike a person, stray pets do not have the option of going to a shelter or home. Most often, they are left to their own devices on the streets on which they live. In extreme cases, these animals might succumb to the elements and exposure. At the very least they have to spend an uncomfortable night in the cold.

Thankfully, individuals around the world take pity on these unfortunate dogs, sometimes allowing them to stay in their home or business when it gets cold outside. One example of this generosity is a coffee shop in Mytilene, Lesbos, located in Greece, which allows strays in after the customers have left for the night. Once inside, the dogs are allowed to sleep on the cushioned benches within the establishment.

Athens, Greece resident Bill McMillian commented on the arrangement in a Life With Dogs interview, “Here in Greece our homes are not large enough for all of us to house animals. That’s why we look after the street dogs. We feed them, pet them, and play with them. They are like our own pets, but they belong to everyone instead.”

Another great example of the kindness that humans sometimes show to the stray dogs in the city is the Atrium Mall in Istanbul, Turkey. The mall opened its doors to homeless dogs when a snowstorm hit the region. In addition to giving the dogs a place to sleep, kind individuals brought blankets for the dogs to help keep them warm, and food so that they would have a full stomach during their brief stay.
