Homeless teen ages out of foster care only to find birth sister and get the gift of a lifetime
Being an orphan is never easy.
One has to live without the care and love of a biological family. There are some lucky ones who are able to find a new home, but a few are left in the system.
Some of the reasons why children enter foster care are abandonment, neglect, and abuse. Based on the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS), there are around 420,000 children in foster care in the United States and 120,000 of them are waiting to be adopted.
Half of the children will be reunited with their parents or guardians while one-quarter will be adopted. However, an average of 20,000 youth age out of the foster care system. These teenagers have a high risk of unemployment, poor access to education, and homelessness.
It’s sad to see these teenagers face adolescence and adulthood on their own.
Instead of having a parent to guide and teach them, they have to rely on their own intuition in order to survive.
These teenagers are the same as young children. They both need the love and guidance of a family. However, a lot of teenagers aren’t as lucky. They have to face the harsh reality of life on their own.
This was the situation of Seth Miller.
Seth was among the thousands of teenagers who aged out of foster care. When he was a toddler he was given up for adoption and he stayed in the foster care system until he turned 18. Realizing that no family was going to adopt him, Seth lived on his own.
At only 18 years old, Seth was homeless.
“Everything around me was pretty much empty,” he said in an interview with USA Today.
He lived in his car and tried to make a way for him to live. All Seth ever wished is for him to find a family that would take him in and love him.
Miraculously, his prayers were about to be answered.
Robert and Ara Hunt were a special couple.
In fact, they had adopted Seth’s biological sister, Shyann Hunt.
At first, they were hesitant to meet Seth, but love overruled their fear. They wanted Shyann to meet the older brother she never knew – and the reunion was definitely emotional.
The siblings were overjoyed to see each other.
Then, the couple asked Seth to move in with them.
Robert and Ara already had a huge family. They had two daughters and one son living with them, but it didn’t stop them from making room for Seth. At first, it was a challenge because everyone was adjusting.
The couple soon realized that they wanted to adopt Seth!
One night, they sat down with the family and announced they were going to adopt Seth. The children were overjoyed because they already considered Seth as their brother. It wasn’t long before they appeared in court in order to legally adopt Seth.
After a year, Seth became Robert and Ara’s son.
To honor his new family, he changed his name to Logan Hunt. It was a happy time for everyone.
