Dog is abandoned with note and bags – and a homeless woman was the only one willing to help him
When Lisa Snyder saw a dog tied to a pole in a park in San Pedro, California, she didn’t know what to think. Homeless, she lived in an inoperable van with her three cats.
The dog, a Pointer mix named Joey, had a note attached to his collar written in green marker. What it said broke Snyder’s heart.

The note read: “My name is Joey. I am looking for a home, Please take care of me!!”
Joey had been abandoned by his owner. Fortunately, Snyder had found him. Joey showed his fear as he barked at everybody who passed by, but Snyder saw through his apparent aggression. She was heartbroken at Joey’s plight, especially when no one seemed like they wanted to come forward and help him.
She decided to help Joey
Refusing to turn a blind eye, Snyder decided to take matters into her own hands. She would take Joey to the nearest shelter so that he could get the help he needed. Unfortunately, she had no idea where to find one.
Undeterred, she grabbed his leash and walked through the cold and rainy night to find one.
Snyder walked 3 miles top find Joey help
Finally, after walking for three miles, Snyder was able to find a shelter. FORTE Animal Rescue took Joey in and promised Snyder that it would find him a new home. Reassured, she left Joey at the shelter and returned to her life on the streets.
Little did she know the events she had set in motion with her kindness.
The shelter finds Joey a new home
Meanwhile, the shelter was able to find Joey a home with a loving family. In his new home, he became best friends with the family’s little girl.
Shelter staff spread the word about Snyder’s good heart. The community decided to repay her kind-hearted gesture. A fundraiser was started in her honor, and soon enough money was raised to fix her van. The GoFundMe also raised an additional $3,590 to help her get back on her feet.
The community pays Snyder back for her kindness
In tears, Snyder thanked everyone for their kindness. To her, Joey was a metaphor for all of the people who had been trod upon in society, and by paying it forward with kindness, she hoped that humanity could become greater. By helping him, she was just doing her part.
