People miss restaurants so much that they're making their own sushi trains during lockdown

Being cooped up in the house all day during this pandemic with kids is anything but easy. In fact, it’s enough to drive some people crazy.

Perhaps that’s why several families are coming up with innovative ways to keep themselves entertained. Whether you’ve decided to build your own obstacle course or turn your home into a movie theater, there’s always something that can be done to make things more bearable.

A freelance writer from Australia, Katherine Bowman, 29, decided to liven things up by turning the dinner table into a fun place to chow down.

Bowman is a mother of three, including a set of twins. The eldest, Sienna, is four-years-old, and the twins are two. Talk about trying to maintain your sanity!

But you know what they say, desperate times call for desperate measures. After all, this family was really missing the sushi restaurant experience. That’s when Bowman set up a “rotation sushi” restaurant in her kitchen.

“We no longer live near a sushi train, but any chance she has, she chooses sushi, and if we are away from home and there’s a sushi train, she gets really excited to go there,” Bowman shared in reference to her daughter.

What’s “rotation sushi,” you ask?

Let’s just say that it’s something you have to see to believe. Popular in Japan, this unique way of enjoying raw fish consists of placing the dishes on conveyor belts that weave through a dining area. Guests simply grab the items they want from the belt.

If you’re not a sushi fan, there’s no need to fret. In addition to sushi, fruit, desserts, soups, and drinks are placed on the belt as well. But if you’re craving a particular item, feel free to put in a special order.

While rotation sushi might not be as fancy at home as it is in a restaurant, it can be just as fun. Maybe even a bit more since the creation is in your hands!

For Bowman, that’s all she needed when she designed her sushi contraption. Using her children’s train set, she came up with a fun roundabout way to enjoy mealtime. But she wasn’t alone. Others decided to make some sushi trains of their own.

Each one has its own unique design. While some are larger than others, they all serve the same purpose; they’re fun and delicious!

Just ask Bowman! She shared how happy her daughter was at the sight of the sushi train.

“She was so excited! Even her two-year-old twin sisters were excited. They all wowed at it and jumped straight up onto their chairs for dinner.”

Bowman did say that making sushi trains isn’t part of the norm. Rather, it’s just something that she decided to do to spice things up if you will.

“I don’t normally go to this extreme for dinner. This was just a special bit of fun because we’re all starting to get a bit bored at home.”

If you feel like you’re running out of ways to make the mundane a little more exciting, try hitching a ride on a sushi train!
