If you own a German shepherd then you know how much of a loyal and lovable companion they are. You also have an idea of the amount of work that goes into their care. 1. Forget about alone time
One thing that every owner knows about owning a German shepherd is their need for companionship. But what dog is not like that? If allowed, they will occupy a lot of your time. But can you blame them, being as full of energy as they are?
2. People are afraid to come to your door
A German shepherd can be a very intimidating dog. So, expect to have to walk down to your gate for a package. And forget about Girl Scout cookies. There is no way you are getting them to come to your door after they see your large dog.
3. Cleaning windows is now a part of your life
Naturally inquisitive, German shepherds love to look out the windows of your home to see what is going on. Of course, this means that they leave behind nose art on your glass surfaces. Just make sure you have some Windex handy and plenty of paper towels.
4. They have so much energy
Few are prepared for the energy level of a German shepherd. They love to run and jump, so be ready to take them out every day, whether you are feeling well or not. The words “Sick Day” are not in the vocabulary of a German shepherd.
5. People assume your German shepherd is a service or police dog
Just because they look like a police dog does not mean a German shepherd is in that line of work. Sure, they could have done that formally, but chances are they are no longer in that line of work. Otherwise, why would they be out in public or at home when they should be out working as a police dog?

It never fails, when dinner time rolls around, your German shepherd will be sure to let you know it is time to eat. These reminders are often in the form of them playing with their bowl as if to say, “Why is this empty?”
7. You’ll have a friend for life
German shepherds are some of the most loyal dogs out there. They will stay by your side through thick and thin. They make great guard dogs and protectors and are as smart as they come. And while they are a handful at times, they are worth all of the effort.
