Woman follows gut instinct during search for missing girl then hears whimpers

Don’t leave your toddlers unattended. They might grab something they’re not supposed to, put something in their mouths, or in this case, wander off to get lost in the woods. Thank god this one didn’t end up in a witch’s cottage!

A toddler, 2-year-old Iris Nix, went missing near the woods in Molalla, Oregon.

It began as a quiet hike with her 4-year-old sister and her grandmother, Gayla Jay. Oregon boasts many places ideal for hiking thanks to many forests in the state.

But hiking isn’t totally without its risks. It’s rare, but there have been instances of hikers running into mountain lions or getting lost.

Accompanying the toddler, her sister, and her grandma were their two dogs.

Then, as toddlers do, Iris began running off by herself. She outpaced her grandma and sister and eventually got lost.

Now, grandma Gayla was missing one child and desperately needed help to find her.

Her grandmother ran to ask for help. She ran for the road to ask strangers for help.

The local sheriff’s office closed the roads too in case the toddler ended up somewhere on the road.

She also found some loggers nearby, who called 911 and helped her too.

Another volunteer happened to cross paths with them. It was Tammy Stevens, who was on horseback with her two dogs.

There’s something about horseback riding that tells you someone is good with the outdoors. This was no exception. Tammy knew this area incredibly well.

With her horse, “Bo”, and her two Australian Shepherds, Maddie and Wilson, she was the best person you could ask to locate a missing child here.

Like a knight riding a fierce steed, Tammy split from the others and searched based on her instincts.

Tammy knew these woods incredibly well. That, and a horse can cover ground a lot faster than a person. This was a fairly dangerous area according to the horseback-riding local.

After a while, Tammy heard the missing toddler. The sound of a child whimpering was audible in the distance, but Tammy couldn’t pinpoint where.

Luckily, Bo wasn’t the only animal companion of hers present. Her dogs Maddie and Wilson were there to lend a nose or two.

“I said ‘Wilson, go find her!’ And he’s just bounding, it’s straight up and he’s just leaping.” Tammy said.

Iris was on an incline 70 feet above where Tammy was.

She was in peril from such a height, and it’s very fortunate that Tammy got to her in time.

After tying Bo to a tree, Tammy and the dogs began working their way up the hill to get Iris. Wilson was leading the rescue and got to the toddler first.

Tammy followed her trusty dog and found the toddler.

“I just followed Wilson and he was just laying with his little front paws on Iris’ lap. She had her little hand on him and she was crying, just sobbing, and oh God.” recalled Tammy as she held back tears.

You might have cried too if you were in Tammy’s place, and so might I. Iris was okay thanks to Tammy’s incredible dogs and her reliable horse.

With the toddler safe, the group hiked back together to the staging area and crossed paths with a logger who helped get them a ride home.

Naturally, the heroic and adorable nature of it all made for an incredible news story.
