Horses crash socially-distant outdoor salsa class – and they’ve got the moves
Salsa dancing is hot all over the world these days!
But it’s going viral in The Hague, Netherlands of all places thanks to an impromptu outdoor class led by dance instructor Fiek Vanderharst.
At the end of May, Vanderharst and her half-dozen students gathered in Zuiderpark for their lesson/demo and while others in the park looked on, no one was more interested in two police officers on horseback patrolling the area.
“Last night I did a salsa lesson in the Zuiderpark The Hague,” Vanderharst wrote on Facebook. “Two police officers on horse came by and decided to join a dance! Great and what an enthusiasm.”
The Zuiderpark Police Unit couldn’t help but join in – but even better, the horses themselves were successfully following along with the moves!
The video of the joyful group was taken by bystander Bob Bogaard and shows some seriously socially-distanced but still fun-loving dancing.
Of course, the dancers can’t help but continue to turn around to watch the horses.
Everyone is happy and smiling – and we have to say that the officers have great control over their equine partners!
We’ve never seen a horse salsa dance, but they’re coming pretty close!
The adorable video went viral on both Vanderharst’s page as well as the Dutch journalist Martijn Mastenbroek’s Twitter account.
From there, it made its way to Reddit, where some were not so ready to cheer on the police considering the world-wide protests against police brutality.
But many commenters found the moment delightful.
And one commenter on Reddit even gave some helpful insight into just how the horses got those moves.
“These horses are dressage horses! They’re trained to do this, and probably think this is a blast….my old trainer helped start Dutch police horses, and they start them (according to her) in dressage. The basics, like leg yields, backing up, etc.”
We wouldn’t expect just any horse to move their hooves along to some salsa.
Of course, plenty of commenters were there to profess their expertise in horse movement and insist the horses were simply being forced to do something they didn’t want to.
Frankly, we don’t know what the horses were thinking but the officers who ride them have to have good relationships with them – and we imagine that bullying a horse wouldn’t set someone up for a great partnership.
Vanderharst was thrilled at the attention the video of her class was getting from around the world.
She thanked everyone who had viewed in one week later in a May 28 Facebook post:
“One week ago I posted a video of me and my friends to which we danced salsa, with company of two police officers on horseback. A special and unique situation, which especially gave and radiated lots of fun. A positive vibe, in this (still) weird time.
I asked y’all to share the video and this was done massively. Now we are one week further and the video has continued all of Europe and even out there like America. Multiple media platforms were interested in this video. Bizarre and incredibly amazing 😁I want to thank you for sharing, because of you this video went viral. Without you, this wouldn’t be possible!”
Frankly, it was our pleasure to watch it.
