Experts reveal how often you should wash your jeans and it’s not what we expected

Jeans are a staple piece of clothing that you go to when you want to dress quickly.

Is there anyone who doesn’t own at least one pair of jeans? They are practical, and you can easily combine them with almost everything.

So, where is the problem?

Well, it’s not quite a problem, more like a dilemma – how do you take care of such a diverse fashion item? How often do you wash your jeans? At what temperature? Do they lose the color quickly?

Stay tuned, we’ve listened to what experts have spoken, and you’ll be surprised.

Jean-wearers probably know by now that washing their jeans less often reduces energy use, climate change impact, and water intake.

Alright, let’s be fair.

Most of us didn’t think along those lines, and we were more concerned about keeping our favorite pair of denim looking as good as new. However, the global side of the story is quite intriguing.

According to a 2015 Levi report, the life cycle of jeans assumes that you’ll be washing your jeans every ten years, not more often.

Moreover, Levi’s CEO, Chip Bergh, confessed to not putting his jeans in the washing machine for almost a decade. But, what about personal hygiene?

In 2017, research was conducted at the University of Alberta, where one student wore the same pair of jeans every day for over a year. The results were shocking.

After a thorough examination of the jeans, scientists concluded that they contained the same bacteria levels as they did when the student wore them for a couple of days.

Besides, the fabric of denim is thick, and you’re wearing a layer of underwear beneath the jeans. All concerns about bacteria are groundless. Some brands, including Levi’s, added the information to a cleaning guide on their jeans.

Now, the grand reveal: use the smell test to decide when it’s time to wash your jeans.

You have read that correctly. Try wearing your jeans at least three times before washing them. Experts, and even famous people, worldwide agree on one thing: unwashed and untreated jeans mold your body better.

The less you wash them, the cooler they look.

This rule doesn’t include specific situations. For example, if you’ve been gardening in your jeans the entire day and they look filthy, of course, you’re going to wash them. In other cases, rely on their smell. If your favorite pair of denim doesn’t reek, and they don’t feel icky when you wear them, then let them be.

Forget about tricks like putting your jeans into the freezer

A lot of denim obsessives swear by putting their jeans in the fridge to kill the bacteria. Previous studies have shown that it doesn’t do much.

You can try that, your jeans will feel refreshed, but you won’t achieve much when it comes to cleaning them.

How to clean your jeans?

No one has the universal answer to that question.

You have probably formed your washing routine by now to keep jeans from looking worn out. If you still struggle with the fact that your denim looks destroyed after a couple of washings, then consider air-drying your jeans. Don’t push them in the dryer if you don’t have to.

Also, if there’s a stain on your jeans, try spot-cleaning first.

It’s way better than pushing them to a washing machine as soon as you see a minor blemish on them. Next time you see a spatter on your jeans, grab some mild soap and a wet cloth. You’ll be thankful later. Now go, walk those beautiful jeans proudly, and remember to enjoy every step on the way.
