Farmer shows how to pick the sweetest watermelons at the grocery store
Watermelons are a delicious sweet snack that is both a vegetable and a fruit.
The most difficult task of selecting a watermelon is selecting one that has ripened adequately but has not gotten overripe.
Watermelon is made up of 92 percent water. Making this fruit good for us and refreshing especially on a hot summer day.
One farmer named Jag Singh shared some simple advice about watermelon.
Here are four techniques to determine when a watermelon is fully ripe.
1. Examine the watermelon’s stem
Watermelons are usually found in a large cardboard container when you go to the produce section. Unless you know what you’re looking for, all watermelons seem the same.
However, there is a simple way to determine whether a watermelon was picked before it was fully ripe.
Simply look at the stem of the watermelon where the vine was attached. If it’s green, it was picked too early and won’t be as ripe as it should be.
The presence of a brown stem shows that the watermelon had fully ripened. As a result, you’ll have a nicely ripened watermelon with a sweet and juicy inside.
2. Look for the spot on the watermelon’s rind
Looking for spots on the outside of a watermelon is another method to tell if it was allowed to fully ripen.
If there is a small white spot, the watermelon was probably picked too soon.
A huge yellow patch on the outside of a watermelon indicates that the vegetable/fruit bathed under the sun’s rays. It means it’s mature more thoroughly.
Watermelons with this huge, creamy yellow spot, commonly known as a “field spot,” are ripe and ready to eat.
3. Test the watermelon for firmness
The hardness of watermelon also helps to determine whether it is ripe or not.
A watermelon that is excessively stiff or does not give when pushed on the outside is not yet ripe.
A watermelon that yields slightly when pressed is, on the other hand, ideal.
However, if the outer skin or rind of a watermelon yields too much, it is overripe.
4. Give the watermelon a good tap
The sound a watermelon makes when tapped is also an excellent measure of its ripeness.
Tap the watermelon in the center and listen to the sound it makes. If the sound is high-pitched, the watermelon is not fully ripe.
Similarly, if you tap a watermelon, it will emit a low-pitched sound, indicating that it is overripe. Watermelons with a hollow sound or a plop when tapped are ideal.
These watermelons are packed with water and have the most delicious flavor.
Watermelon has numerous health benefits.
It’s not only low in calories, approximately 45 calories per cup. But a serving size also contains 20 percent of daily vitamin C requirements, a little fiber, and 17 percent vitamin A.
As a red fruit, it is also high in the antioxidant lycopene, with a concentration even higher than tomatoes!
It’s also a good source of hydration, thanks to its high water content.
