How to style your dog’s hair at home when you can’t get to the groomer
Professional pet groomers do amazing work but let’s face the facts; it’s quite expensive when you avail them of their services.
Lately, we’ve only been allowed to go out of our homes when we need to buy necessities, and pet groomers haven’t really been all that accessible. Plus the fact that their services aren’t cheap and we need to spend our money wisely.
However, that doesn’t mean that we’ll let our beloved dog’s coat grow too long and make them uncomfortable, right? If you’re thinking what we are thinking, then it’s time to get excited!
Why not give your beloved fur baby a good haircut in the comfort of your own home?
It’s definitely cheaper plus, you might find yourself enjoying this newfound skill. You may even be surprised to know that it’s not that hard to do.
Are you ready to give your doggo a makeover?
Just follow these simple tips and you will be on your way to becoming your dog’s own personal groomer:
Prepare
Being prepared before grooming your dog is very important. You wouldn’t want to start looking for your clippers or scissors in the middle of your grooming session, right?
You need to be able to prepare everything before starting. Here are some things you’ll need to consider:
- What do you want your dog to look like? Take your time to choose what look you’re aiming to achieve. You can find many tutorials and inspirations for the look that you want.
- Do you prefer scissors or clippers? Know the difference between the two and be familiar with how each one works.
- When buying clippers, choose the quiet ones. Dogs can get a little bit anxious with the sound that these clippers make. Make sure to clean and store them properly too.
- Be familiar with your dog’s coat. Some can be thick, and some can be tangled. Make sure that you’re familiar with their facial features, genital area, nipples, and even their claws.
- Take your time. Don’t do it if you are in a hurry. You need to be patient and calm when you’re grooming your furbaby. Enjoy the process so your dog won’t feel nervous or agitated.
When to use clippers:
Choosing between clippers and scissors can be confusing at first, so let us help you with a few pointers to remember.
Use clippers if you have shorthaired dogs. This will make everything easier plus this is the best option if your pet needs thorough grooming.
The snap-on combs that come with the clippers will help you in achieving your desired over-all look.
If your dog won’t stay still and if you’re still unsure about what you are doing, it’s best to start off with clippers then work your way into learning how to use scissors.
Now that you’re prepared, it’s time to get to work.
- Start off by washing and detangling your dog’s fur.
- Start with the direction of their hair growth.
- Start grooming from the neck and work slowly towards the back of the legs.
- Take your time. If you become nervous, your dog will feel the same way too.
- Hold your dog but make sure not to use too much force. Rather, use a firm grip so you can work on the sensitive areas.
- Play music or speak to your dog like you normally do.
- Have treats ready for being a good doggo.
When to use scissors:
Clippers may not always be the best choice for you, especially if you have long-haired dogs. Some dogs only need a little trim, which means scissors would be preferable.
- Choosing the right type of scissors is very important. There are scissors for basic cutting, for rounding layers, and don’t forget your thinning shears as well.
- Don’t rush and take your time. Know what length you want to keep.
- Always start at the front and then slowly work towards the back. Leave the sensitive areas for last.
- Thinning shears will be your best friend when it comes to thick, heavy, and matted fur.
- Remember to keep the pointed part of the scissors away from your dog’s skin.
It’s normal to feel nervous the first time but don’t worry, as you learn to do this it will eventually become easier and enjoyable.
