2-year-old St. Bernard meets his 95-year-old neighbor – and the two immediately fall in love

In a small northern town in Washington state, not far from Canada’s border, a beautiful friendship was formed between a St. Bernard puppy and his kind 95-year-old neighbor, Sally. The dog’s name is Brody, and he belongs to Sally’s neighbors, Dave and Edie Mazzarella.

The story of how the Bernard became buddies with his neighbor has melted the hearts of millions since KOMO News reported on their story last May in 2019.

It all started with Brody sneaking out for a walk.

Mt. Vernon is still pretty quaint for a city of its size. With roughly 30-40,000 people that’s no small feat. In Sally and the Mazarella’s neighborhood, though, people still trust their neighbors. In light of that, there are no fences or other barriers separating their yards from one another. The community has an open and welcoming vibe, and it’s one that Brody picked up on right away.

When the Mazarellas first brought the Bernard home, Brody decided to give them a scare.

I had just given him a bath, and I went in the house and he was gone,” Dave told KOMO News.

Dave and Edie frantically searched the house for their oversized pup but didn’t find hide nor hair of him. Knowing that he couldn’t have gone too far, they decided to check with the neighbor.

It turns out that the big ol’ pooch just wanted to take himself out for a walk.

Thankfully, his parents had headed in the right direction when they went looking for him. They walked over to Sally’s place, who was 93 at the time, to see if their fluffy pup had gone on a meet and greet.

I walked around and sure enough there she was. They had met for the first time without me,” Dave continued.

Sally is an adorable little old Dutch woman. The then 93-year-old lived alone and was always ready to welcome company, especially from furry friends like Brody.

There was a little puppy laying by my sliding doors and he was so cute! And little. And he stayed there, and that was Brody!” Sally remembers of her first meeting with the sweet pup.

Sally fell in love with the adorably curious Bernard right away but unfortunately didn’t have any tasty dog treats to hand. The sweet little old lady wanted to reward Brody for being such a nice visitor, so she gave him what she had to hand.

I thought, well, maybe he wants some old bread. And he loved it! And to this day, you will not believe it, he will not take dog food from me! He only wants bread from me!” Sally explained, still in disbelief.

After their first visit together, they became friends for life and the big, lovable Bernard would walk over to visit with his best friend every single day. According to Sally, sometimes he would come even 3 to 4 times a day to get loves, pets, and of course, old bread.

It was apparent that the St. Bernard had bonded with his elderly neighbor right away, so his dad started posting videos and pictures of them together on Instagram. Their relationship is just too precious not to share with the world.

There are dozens of videos and images of Brody following Sally around her yard as she waters her plants, or plopping his enormous paws on her sliding glass window, looking for her until she finally spots him and lets him in.

Unfortunately, Sally suffered a heart attack that eventually led her and her family to decide that she should move into a residential care facility.

Thankfully, Sally is thriving just fine in her new environment and making plenty of friends, so she isn’t lonely. Her St. Bernard friend, on the other hand, was having a much harder time dealing with her absence.

He was sad. He was looking for Sally and he didn’t understand where she went,” explained Edie.

He didn’t know any different. He just went over there every day, but there were no more treats, so he would just stay there and sit there and fall asleep on the porch. So I’d have to call him back or drag him back,” said Dave.

The St. Bernard misses his friend so much that he searches for her face in every old lady he meets.

In fact, there’s even a video on his Instagram account that shows him excitedly standing next to a completely random stranger that he thought was Sally, and it’s too adorable.

Seeing how hard it was on Brody to be separated from his dear friend so much, Dave decided to drive him over to see her at her new residence.

Thankfully, Sally’s new apartment is just a few miles up the road from their neighborhood. From the second the giant St. Bernard sees his Sally again, he is as happy as can possibly be. It’s so obvious in his body language that he has been missing his friend terribly. Of course, Sally was thrilled to see Brody, too.

Are you going to stay with me today? Do you hear the birdies? Do you hear the birdies, Brody? Ahhhh Brrrrrrody…” Sally says in her cute, high pitched voice as she rolls through her R’s in classic Dutch fashion.

Now their visits have become a regular thing again and Brody is very happy about that. He might not get to see her every day anymore, but it just makes the time they do get to spend together that much more special.
