Ice skaters give emotional and gravity-defying performance to "Sound of Silence"

Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres are long-time, experienced French pair skaters. It’s a profession that takes an insane amount of practice and experience to master.

This performance at the International Skating Union’s World Team Trophy competition, held in Japan, saw the pair take center stage and put their years of skill to show. Everyone watching couldn’t prepare for what Vanessa and Morgan had to offer, as we’re about see.

Holding each other’s hands, Vanessa and Morgan skated onto the stadium, welcomed by a round of applause as the announcer introduced them. They raised their arms high up to greet the crowd back. As they warmed up, they assumed their positions and bowed their heads in anticipation of the music.

The music starts, and the skates start sliding.

Their song of choice being Disturbed’s rendition of “The Sound of Silence”. The slow, yet powerful melody of the song couldn’t have been a better match for their style. We see them begin with some precise twirling around each other on the ice.

Then the real showstopping stuff begins. They turn up the intensity a little bit and seem to glide along the ice in perfect synchronization.

Hardly missing their cue with such precise coordination, they almost look like a pair of birds doing a courtship dance in the sky. It’s truly incredible in every way.

At the speed they’re going, maintaining this sort of sync and precision is mind-boggling. The pair does an aerial twirl, and another, and another, all in split-second succession – and the audience is blown away already.

This pair isn’t stopping yet, and that was only a quick demonstration of their skills.

Making a trip around the rink, they approach each other once more and gracefully glide along the rink in preparation for the next few maneuvers they practiced. Morgan then takes Vanessa and tosses her into the air, while Vanessa spins and lands on her feet without losing any form. Vanessa’s coordination is incredible, and the crowd gives them another much-deserved cheer.

Morgan grasps Vanessa and tosses her into the air several more times, and each time she lands perfectly and continues their beautiful performance. The spectacle looks magical, and the vocals of the track accompanying the dramatic movements of their performance look straight out of a Disney film.

Vanessa had this to say about them choosing the song years ago :

“Morgan listened to it and was like, ‘I don’t like it,’ because we weren’t used to it,” James told the AP. “And I was like, ‘OK, let me see if I can get into this.’ I thought it could be amazing, and I was like, ‘Morgan, let’s trust them.’ And we were so right to have trusted them.”

Take my arms that I might reach you

The pair keeps up the intensity for a whole 8 minutes! Never missing a cue or a step. It’s truly spectacular to witness. Every graceful swing and toss is carefully planned and rehearsed, and the two deserve all the praise they can possibly get. Anything less would be a disservice.

They don’t stop with just twirls and tosses either. Morgan even takes Vanessa’s hands and they mimic a spinning clock hand with Vanessa acting as the hand. It’s superbly impressive, and we’ve come to expect no less from the pair.

It also highlights how much trust Vanessa has for her skating partner. After doing this for years, we’re sure Vanessa knows Morgan would never let her fall. The performance ends and the crowd realizes they’ve witnessed the show of a lifetime.

Amazing is hardly a good description. This performance was legendary, in every single way.
