If regular yoga isn't for you, try the latest trend - Rage Yoga
When people think of yoga, they usually think of peace, tranquility, mindfullness- overall just a lot of relaxation. You go with your girlfriends to start your day off with some stretching and positivity.
There are several kinds too from hot yoga studios (yoga, but in a 90-degree room, sweating out calories)
goat yoga (yoga with adorable goats wandering and jumping in and out of your poses), and the latest trend rage yoga- a different kind of stress-relieving yoga class.Meet Lindsay Istace, the founder of Rage Yoga. Her website describes rage yoga as “a practice involving stretching, positional exercises and bad humor, with the goal of attaining good health and to become zen AF. More than just a practice, Rage Yoga is an attitude.” Feeling out of place at a regular yoga studio is a common experience for a lot of people looking to get into the practice, something that Istace experienced and inspired her to start her unique brand of yoga.
“My practice gave me a strong body-mind connection and a new appreciation for my body. I learned how to slow my mind, feel good in my body and built up some decent pipes while I was at it. It helped me overcome addiction and weather a lot of personal obstacles. It kept me healthy and sane.” This version of yoga is great stress reliever for a the type of people who bottle things up and just need to let go. The techniques include swearing, yelling, and maybe a beer as well. The instructors at Rage Yoga insist that getting angry is a good way to get in touch with yourself.
It takes more than just some flexibility and anger to become an instructor though. To become a certified instructor, you have to have a minimum 200 hours of yoga instruction certification on top of their 3 day certification program. And like the instructors say, it’s not for everyone. “We actually take beer breaks during the class […] I also don’t recommend bringing your children.” one instructor says of her practice in Houston.
Right now there are only three locations- Calgary, Edmonton, and Houston (where the twice monthly classes take place in a brewery). Hopefully more will be opening up, but don’t worry, you can still get your anger out with their online classes. On the Rage yoga website, there are 2 six week classes- “Zen as F*ck” for the beginning yogi, and “Bendy and bada**” for the more practiced. With either course you get 2 video classes a week and a 100% bullsh*t free guarantee. It’s $90 for the subscription, but compared to some studios, that’s a deal, and you can do it from the comfort of your own home. Either way, if you want to get into yoga but haven’t found the right class, maybe rage yoga is the class for you.
