Indian mother is bringing parental wisdom to Instagram

We say “with age comes wisdom,” but we all know a couple of people who haven’t exactly absorbed all the lessons that getting older has introduced them to.

However, many of us are lucky enough to have an older, wiser mom, dad, mentor, etc. to share the facts of life with us (and not just the bird and bees variety).

Poonam Sapra started an Instagram account so she could share her motherly wisdom with her son Pranav as well as the rest of us. And we’re loving it!

Don’t you just want this woman to bestow some wisdom on you?

Riffing on the @dudewithsign account, she created @motherwithsign.

And these are our 15 favorite pieces of wisdom so far:

1. The classic

This is Sapra’s very first post, so she came out of the gate with the classic “eat your greens” advice. And while it might be yucky sometimes, it’s true.

Green veggies so all sorts of good things for your body. (We just wished they all tasted as good.)

2. Choose well, and for yourself

Choosing a mate and making the decision based on your own set of desires and priorities seems like a no-brainer. Of course, in some cultures, parents have a big say.

But even when they don’t, we sometimes make decisions based on outside pressures and perceptions – this is just a reminder that we should be more intentional.

3. Stay hydrated

Oops. We’ll be right back. We need to go refill our glasses.

Could we get some sort of mom pop-up on our computers 7 or 8 times a day with this message?

4. We’ve all needed help

Aww, we like this one.

It’s true that sometimes we sigh when we have to help out our parents with tech. This seems like a pretty subtle reminder of all the things they once had to teach us.

5. Gratitude

It’s pretty humbling to think about how much more we have than others. Even if you’re reading this on a device of your own and have access to the Internet, that’s more than many.

This Indian mom just wants you to remember that from time to time.

6. Vocalize your needs

Well, dang, mama – it’s like she’s in our homes and our heads right now.

Everyone needs a good reminder to share and respect boundaries.

7. COVID wisdom

Sapra gives us another good reminder about what to hide and what to “show” or express.

8. You define you

We could have used this advice in our younger years.

There were certainly times in our lives when we let other people’s opinions influence our feelings of self-worth.

9. Be yourself

We all have our own ways of being, even when we have things in common with others.

Blending in is a waste of your creativity and potential.

10. Fight for what matters to you

Sapra said it best in her caption for this one:

“It is your life and your choice should be paramount! Don’t let anyone tell you to lower your expectations on things that are important to you. You have to live with your decisions, not them.”

11. No one knows it all

People speak with such authority (or volume) that they can easily make us feel intimidated into just believing them.

But there’s power in acknowledging what you don’t know – and even more power in learning more rather than just listening to the loudest person.

12. In sickness and health

Seriously. Always wash your hands before you eat.

Very few of us were doing it before this year, but we should all remember to keep doing it after COVID is over!

13. We are all equally worthy

Is there anything more telling of a person’s moral code than hearing them say someone doesn’t deserve the same opportunities they have?

14. And animals too!

While we’re at it, respect ALL life.

15. Take your chance

It’s better than living life with regrets.
