Man who grew up without a father creates YouTube videos to teach kids basic household skills
Fatherly figures play a significant role in our lives. But sometimes a father isn’t always around to play catch in the backyard or there to help you change your tire. One way or another people find fatherly figures elsewhere. Thankfully there’s a new ‘internet dad’ who is here to help kids who are missing that fatherly advice.
#1 Dad
Rob Kenney has become the father we always needed, creating a YouTube channel called ‘Dad, How Do I?’. Kenney’s channel gives helpful videos and advice from how to unclog a toilet, to how to be good to yourself. Kenney had to face his own hardships when his father walked out on him when he was just a kid. That missing piece of the ‘family puzzle’ gave him a perspective of fatherhood which inspired him to rewrite his narrative.
Living & Learning
When Kenney became a father himself, he wanted to be the best father he could be. Kenney explained to Shattered magazine,
âMy goal in my life was to raise good adults,â
âI never wanted to be wealthy. I never wanted to be necessarily successful. My goal in life was to raise good adults â not good children but good adults â because I had a fractured childhood.â
Paying It Forward
Kenney and his wife of 29 years raised two now-grown children who have both become successful adults. Kenney’s wisdom of fatherhood sparked an idea to create helpful videos of skills they don’t teach you in high school. He had put it off long enough and quarantine was a perfect opportunity for him to start recording!
‘Internet Dad’
So Kenney started his YouTube channel on April 2nd releasing his first video on how to tie a tie. Since then Kenney has gained 2.M subscribers on his “Dad, How Do I?” channel. Kenney posts his helpful how-to videos every Thursday, with videos from how to use a stud finder to how to check your car’s oil.
The World’s Father Figure
In just 2 months he’s become a father figure for millions of people all over the world. A week ago the ‘internet dad’ admitted in an appreciation video titled “THANK YOU!” saying,
âPlease understand I didnât always do everything right with my kids,â
âIf I fail, if youâre gonna fail as a dad; itâs part of the human experience. You arenât gonna always do things right, so I think itâs very important to ask for forgiveness and not pretend that youâve got it all figured out. Cause your kids are gonna find out sooner or later that you donât have it figured out when they grow up, right?”

Kenney’s ‘pay it forward’ has impacted the world in such a positive way. He tells Shattered magazine about his channel saying,
âI want it to be about everyday tasks, but I also would like to pass along some of the wisdom Iâve learned along the way to encourage peopleâ
Viewers on YouTube have been more than grateful for Kenney’s how-tos.
“My dad passed when I was 15. We never got to the point where these conversations happened. I really, really, from the bottom of my heart appreciate what you are doing here.” one commenter wrote.
