Jamie Lee Curtis shares her thoughts on people’s approach to growing older these days

How do you define beauty?

Do you base it on physique alone?

Like having perfect 36-24-36 measurements, the color of one’s skin, a pointed nose, height, or other things seen from the outside?

There are better standards to go by.

Truth be told, people are now being divided when it comes to defining what true beauty is.

The topic alone is sensitive enough to be talked about for it sparks debates from people who are standing to prove to others what they firmly believe in regarding true beauty.

The negative effect of it is that when a person doesn’t pass someone’s criteria of beauty – then they are not beautiful.

Sadly, this is the kind of society that we have right now.

So, just to feel that sense of belongingness in this “society”, people are now doing measures just to fit in like using excessive filters on their photos on social media.

While some, especially those who could afford it choose to undergo plastic surgery for physical alteration.

Of course, everyone is free to do what they think is best for themselves.

But what happened to natural beauty?

Natural beauty is learning to embrace your flaws and imperfections and just appreciating what you have been blessed with.

A lot might argue about this and call it hypocritical.

However, one veteran Hollywood actress didn’t hold back in talking about all these “unrealistic beauty” standards that have corrupted millions of people from this generation.

Jamie Lee Curtis knows about beauty.

The multiple award-winner is making a stand about redefining beauty.

The ageless 64-year-old actress fearlessly shared her honest opinion about the harmful effects of plastic surgery.

“The current trend of fillers and procedures, and this obsession with filtering, and the things that we do to adjust our appearance on Zoom are wiping out generations of beauty,” said Curtis in her interview with Fast Company.

Is she right about this? People may or may not agree with her, but what she actually said are facts.

Insecurity is also a factor.

Particularly amongst the younger generation where teenagers are resorting to plastic surgery just to be considered “IN”.

Imagine, even those who are under 18 are allowed to undergo plastic surgery as long as there is parental consent.

That means they are free to undergo different operations like liposuction, rhinoplasty, lip fillers, and breast enhancements.

Curtis also pointed out the impact social media is having in relation to fitting in the new generation’s definition of beautiful.

Beauty is more than we think it is.

As concerning as it may have already sounded, kids have easy access to devices that connect them to different social media platforms.

There, they could find thousands to millions of photos and videos that open up their young minds to all these unrealistic beauty standards which Curtis described,

“It’s like giving a chainsaw to a toddler.”

It is actually alarming that when these unrealistic beauty standards are already set in the children’s minds, they might end up considering themselves “ugly.”

As it turned out, Curtis can relate to this feeling.

Many years ago, she told about an incident when a cameraman commented and said that her eyes were so “puffy.”

It made her feel embarrassed and conscious about herself which eventually led her to have a routine surgery.

This led her to become addicted to Vicodin for 10 long years. But now, she said she’s already more than 20 years sober.

Her experience made her realize that there’s nothing wrong with being natural. Curtis doesn’t want cosmetic surgery to dictate what is beautiful and what is not.

“Once you mess with your face, you can’t get it back,” she said.

We may have different opinions about what real beauty is, but at the end of the day, it’s going to be you who will decide whether you feel beautiful or not.

Self-love and contentment, I believe, are the keys to becoming genuinely happy about how you look in front of the mirror.
