John Goodman credits wife of 33 years for saving him when he called her shaking

Just recently, John Goodman and his wife Anna Beth celebrated 33 years of being together.

For a Hollywood star, this is already long considering how some actors switch partners like they were switching clothes.

But just like any other human being in a relationship, the Goodmans had their fair share of trials and awkward moments.

Goodman started acting by the second half of the 1970s.

He became passionate about the craft after an injury ended his career in sports. This would later prove to be a boon.

He started his career in tiny dinner theaters and TV commercials. His first big project was Loose Ends in 1979 which was a Broadway production.

His talent was widely recognized, however, when he played Huckleberry Finn’s father in Big River. He was propelled to fame in the TV series Roseanne, especially after receiving seven Emmy nominations.

He met his wife in 1988.

In an interview with Elle Magazine, Goodman shared that their simple first meeting happened when he was filming Everbody’s All American.

His future wife came up to him at that time and chatted him up at a Halloween party. Goodman said he couldn’t figure out why anyone that pretty was talking to him.

He even stalked his wife to get her attention.

He said that he followed her from a distance after their first meeting at Tipitina’s Music Club. Then, on their trip to the banks of the Mississippi River, Goodman proposed to Anna Beth.

The Goodmans then relocated outside Hollywood when their child was born. They moved to the Garden District of New Orleans when Molly Evangline was born because they didn’t want her to live under the spotlight.

Things weren’t as easy for the Goodmans.

Goodman was facing a personal war by the time he got married. He was on the brink of losing himself and his career as he weathered his way through alcoholism.

At first, he thought he was hiding it well because he was still being cast. But his problems would manifest through slurred speech and missing important things because of being passed out drunk.

When he missed his rehearsal to accept an Emmy Award, Goodman knew he had to do something. Lucky for him, Anna Beth was supportive all the way.

He said telling his wife about his addiction was like handing himself over to the police.

He was shaking when he called his wife. Then, they enrolled him in treatment and other rehabilitative means.

Because of his wife’s support, Goodman pursued a healthier life. To lose weight, he surrendered some of the things he loved. The first to go was alcohol. He also started eating better and even hired a fitness coach.

It was truly a healthy love, literally and figuratively.

While he admitted that he has misgivings as a father to Molly Evangeline, he still showed that he’s willing to work with the people he loves so he can set himself on the right track.
