Johnny Cash's mom was 'famous' for her pineapple pie – here's the recipe
While most of us are familiar with Johnny Cash’s excellent country ballads and folk songs, we’ve never stopped to consider him as a companion in the kitchen.
Cash’s beloved music has filled the lives of many over the years, but his legacy doesn’t end there.
Many of the greatest recipes in life are passed down from generation to generation – handwriting scrawled across old notecards that contain our family’s best-kept secrets.
These gems make their way through the lives of many and are often the most treasured.
Johnny Cash’s mother’s famous pineapple pie makes a strong case.
A post was made a few years ago by a contributor for Food.com. The wife of Johnny Cash’s cousin was the fortunate recipient of a prized family recipe book.
As she wrote in her recipe post:
“Johnny Cash was my husband’s cousin and I was lucky enough to obtain a cookbook of Johnny’s mother’s recipes titled, “Favorite Recipes From Mama Cash’s Kitchen.” I’ve been asked to post some of the recipes from the book and this is one of them.”
She shared the pineapple pie, which was reportedly Cash’s favorite treat.
The best part? It’s so simple that even a kitchen novice can achieve it! None of the ingredients are fancy, the instructions are simple, and the recipe is adaptable to either store-bought or homemade pie crust. As pineapples begin to pop up in the grocery stores, this may be the perfect spring treat just waiting to cool on your windowsill!
Not only is this recipe downright delicious, but it also offers a unique nostalgia.
It’s dreamy to imagine enjoying the very same dessert that tantalized the tastebuds of Johnny Cash himself. Follow along for the recipe!

Taste of Home found this recipe and thoroughly enjoyed the results. They confirmed that the method was easy. And when it came time for the taste test they reported:
“The pie was sweet (but not overly so), thick in body, and delicious. With a glass of milk or black coffee, the pie is just perfect as a little afternoon pick-me-up. Pretty in presentation and lovely in taste, I highly recommend this recipe from Johnny Cash’s own mother. Enjoy!”
Food Blogger Kristy Norrell of 12 Tomatoes also made the pie, and gave it much praise:
“It’s a classic kind of pie – unapologetically sweet and sweetly simple. It’s easy to see why Johnny was fond of it – it’s the kind of pie you fall in love with in just one bite.”
