Woman needs to find her wedding rings lost at the beach so police put their K9 to work
Michigan resident Elsa Green lost something near and dear to her.
The married had woman enjoyed a leisurely trip to the beach with some friends – a trip that should have been nothing more than relaxing and calming.
However, unforeseen circumstances can occur. And, well, Elsa found herself experiencing such a thing.
The site was Eagle River Beach. It was just Elsa and two of her friends, out to enjoy some sand and sunshine.
You can’t enjoy the sunshine without sunscreen.
So Elsa placed her wedding rings inside her hat and set it down so she could apply sunscreen.
As she reached for the hat again, Elsa was treated to the sight of a large beetle crawling over it. We all know insects usually mean no harm, as squeamish as they can make some people. Of course, Elsa couldn’t help but react in disgust.
She flung the hat away in a panic, and only then realized what she’d done. She’d chucked the rings away with it.
That solved the beetle problem for her (the poor beetle!), but created an even bigger problem for Elsa. Her expensive wedding rings, a symbol of her love and commitment to her husband, were now lost.
It’d be even harder than finding a needle in a haystack.
They’d tried searching, and attempted borrowing a man’s metal detector too. Nothing. Elsa had to come to terms with the fact that they’d been claimed by the sand.
In the last ditch-effort, Elsa and her friends sought more help.
This took them to the local sheriff’s department. There, her friend Colleen told the office about their problem.
There, they spoke with Sergeant Brad Pelli. Much to his hesitation, he had to let them know there was little the officers could do. A ring on a huge sandy beach was just nearly impossible to find for any person.
But after thinking about it a bit, Sgt. Pelli had an idea. The task may be nigh-impossible for a person, but perhaps not so much for a dog.
A dog with a well-trained nose might just have a chance.
“He’s trained in article search, so anything with human odor on it he’s going to detect,” Sgt. Pelli explained. “Most of the time, Dogo searches for stolen property.”
The Sergeant and his dog returned 5 minutes later, making their way to the beach.
“The officer asked us to pick up our stuff and go back and wait on the pavement because if we’re too close, the dog will smell us and not the rings,” said Elsa Green
Dogo (that’s his actual name!) got to work and began sniffing. His keen nose probed the area near where the hat was thrown.
After a few minutes, Dogo appeared to have found something. He stopped and laid down. Sgt. Pelli then explained :
“When Dogo lays down, that’s a signal to me that he’s located the item that we’re looking for. I walked right up to where his nose was between his paws, brushed aside some of the sand, and there was a ring.”
Dogo had found the ring that, previously, they’d thought would be near-impossible to find.
Sgt. Pelli let Dogo take a break in their vehicle. Afterward, he returned to the spot where Dogo found the first ring. He dug in the sand for a bit and found the other ring. Dogo had found both rings, can you believe it?
“K-9 Dogo, you will forever be my hero!” Elsa wrote in a Facebook post.
With his powerful nose, Dogo saved the day. He’s the reason Elsa didn’t have to spend a fortune on replacement rings, and it only makes sense that he get the reward and acknowledgment he deserves.
Not to worry, Elsa assures us Dogo will receive some very tasty rewards for his hard work.
“Dogo’s favorite treat is vanilla ice cream so sometime before the end of the summer we plan to bring him some ice cream for his amazing find.”
