Police dog flies through truck window and apprehends suspect after high-speed chase
Sometimes the police require the assistance of their highly trained K-9 members. Duke, a five-year-old Belgian Malinois, with the Corona Police Department in California came to the rescue with his handler.
On Friday, December 20, 31-year-old, Julio Vasquez, a man wanted by police for several domestic violence-related offenses, showed up at his estranged wifeâs workplace.
Vasquezâs wife had a restraining order in place, however, this didnât stop Vasquez from trying to run her over with his truck.
Later the same day, at approximately midnight, Fontana Police were dispatched to the 17300 block of Valley Boulevard in Fontana.
It is not exactly clear what happened during that day, however, Vasquez was reported to be stalking his estranged wife.
When Police arrived, Vasquez entered his vehicle in an attempt to leave the scene. He refused to stop for the police which then led to a high-speed police chase.
The California Highway Patrol was called in to assist with pursuing the suspect. The California Highway Patrol then contacted the Corona Police Department and requested assistance from their police dog, Duke. According to police, they placed spike strips on Highway 10, 57 and 91 in an attempt to stop the suspectsâ vehicle.
The suspect did hit a spike strip on one of the highways. Police forced the suspectsâ vehicle to turn sideways and come to a complete stop. This is referred to as a âPit Maneuverâ.
Even once the suspectsâ vehicle came to a complete stop and the police approached the vehicle, he refused to exit the vehicle. In an attempt to get the suspect out of the vehicle, a police officer fired a bean bag round, shattering the glass in the driverâs side window.
Still, Vasquez refused to exit the vehicle. Police tried several attempts to get him to come out but to no avail.
It was now time to put Officer Neff and Duke to work. Duke was deployed to duty. Without hesitation, Duke leaped and flew through the shattered window to nab the suspect.
A tweet by Corona Police Department stated:
âWhere the suspect refused to exit his vehicle to surrender. Officer Neff and his partner K9 Duke responded to assist and gave several opportunities for the suspect to give up as well, which he refused. K9 Duke apprehended the suspect, and Fontana Police took custody of him.â
Everyone at the scene was stunned by Dukeâs intuitive actions. Police service dogs are trained to bite and scratch suspects but not to maul them.
Another tweet by Corona Police Dept stated:
The suspect was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries. The officers, nor K9 Duke were injured during the incident.
K9 Duke is a Belgian Malinois and is about 5 ½ years oldâ
A previous police dog handler commented on the tweet stating:
âGreat Job Duke and Michael, reminds me of the good old days having my police dogs. Rontu she was 75 pounds could take down 225 pound man in 5 seconds, climb ladders, go through drainage pipes though window and though screen doors, climb 6 food fences search drugs in people MBFâ
The footage from the scene has been viewed by millions of people. People are always interested to see animals at work.
At the end of the pursuit, Vasquez was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries. Duke was unharmed, although Vasquez did punch the dog in a natural reaction when Duke leaped on him.
