Police officers send off hero K9 with one last car ride
They say dogs are man’s most faithful friend. This statement is completely true for a lot of dogs that put their lives on the line just to make communities safe. Dog police officers go through a lot just to fulfill their duties. Some of them get injured while others risk their lives.
Zeus, a German Shepherd, spent 8 years assisting the Ridgefield Police Department in solving crimes and apprehending criminals.
During his service, he was able to assist in tracking down 50 wanted or missing individuals. He also played a big role in the arrest of 250 narcotics.
Zeus’ biggest case was recorded in 2006.
He helped seized 10 pounds of marijuana after being partnered with Officer Murray. He did an incredible job as a K9 officer and his entire department knows that.
Like most dogs, Zeus got old.
And due to health issues, he had to stop working and retire. Officer Murray took him in after his retirement and treated him like a family member.
His health got worse.
Because of his age, Zeus experienced more complicated health issues. One of them was severe degenerative hip disorder. Because of that, he had to be put down.
His team couldn’t let him go without giving him the recognition he deserved.
In a Facebook post, the department shared:
“Zeus, it is with tears in our eyes that we must say goodbye. You were a valued member of our team and only did great things. It was an honor to work beside you and knowing that you were there always helped put our minds at ease. We know you would not have hesitated to lay down your life for any of us if we were ever faced with a life threatening situation. You wore the Ridgefield Police badge with Respect, Pride and Dignity. Thank you for keeping us all safe over the years. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten. Rest in Peace our friend”
Police officers took him for a one-way squad ride.
Placed on a cart, Officer Murray pushed him during the tribute.
Vehicles went from the police headquarter and stopped at the vet hospital.
Meanwhile, at the department, a flag was waved at half staff. A black cloth was draped next to it.
Apart from the people who watched the tribute on the streets, people on the internet expressed their sympathies for the dog and the people he left behind.
One Facebook user said:
“I am so sorry for your tremendous loss. Thank you K-9 Zeus for all your years of bravery. I will be praying for your family at home and at the department, I know they will miss you. RIP Zeus. It is time to rest now. Job well done. ❤”
Another one commented:
“My deepest sympathy to Officer Murray, his family and Ridgefield Police Department. Thank you Zeus for your services. Rest in peace, you will never be forgotten and will forever in our hearts.”
