Suspect goes on the run, not knowing dogged K9 would track him over a mile to arrest
Police dogs serve a variety of important roles in the departments that they are a part of. Not only do they give officers added security while out on patrol with them, they are also used to detect illegal substances and track down suspects. One K9 unit, named Gunner, with the Gatineau Police Department in Quebec City, Canada went out of his way in apprehending a suspect.
Gunner is called in to help track a suspect
K9 Officer Gunner and his handler, Constable Pierre-Francois Blais were called to help in the apprehension of a suspect who had fled the police following a car chase. The suspect had fled in his vehicle after officers attempted to stop him at around 6 a.m. for driving on a suspended license. The 47-year-old suspect refused to stop and the police gave chase.
Gunner gives dogged pursuit
After the short chase, the suspect abandoned his vehicle at an intersection and fled on foot. He fled into a nearby home but had slipped out the back by the time police officers arrived and entered the residence. That is when Officers Gunner and Blais were called in. Soon upon arriving, Gunner had the suspect’s scent and was on his trail.
The suspect is eventually apprehended thanks to Gunner
What transpired was a 1 1/2-mile trek through various types of terrain with many obstacles. Gunner was relentless in his pursuit, never giving up. Eventually, the suspect, exhausted from his efforts to flee, gave up and was arrested around 7:30 a.m. The suspect was charged with obstruction, flight, driving on a suspended license, breach of recognizance, and uttering verbal threats. His vehicle was also seized for 30 days and he might face other charges at his court appearance.
Gunner’s other heroics
In addition to tracking and helping in the arrest of the fleeing suspect, the five-year-old Gunner has also participated in another notable case. The case involved Officers Gunner and Blais tracking down a young autistic man who was missing. The man was safely returned to his home all thanks to Gunner’s skill and quick action.
In addition to tracking missing persons and suspects, police K9s have a wide variety of tasks that they perform, including drug detection Gunner also serves in community outreach where he demonstrates the skills he has learned throughout his training. His abilities during real-life events and as a part of demonstrations in the community make Gunner a crucial member of the Gatineau Police Department.
K9 Officers around the world
In addition to Gunner, other K9 officers serve in police forces all across Canada, and around the world. Without their devotion and dedication to their duty and community, the job of countless human officers around the world would be that much more difficult. Thanks to K9 Officer Gunner, and other K9 Officers like him, the world is a safer place.
