Sometimes, the weather is really nice and all you want to do is spend the day playing in the sunshine instead of working. Turns out, the same thing happens with dogs. Sometimes, they just can’t seem to focus on their work. One dog, in particular, was supposed to be focussed on his job as a K9, but he just wasn’t in the mood for it.

Jango Fett is a K9 with the Anne Arundel County Sheriff’s Office.

The little guy normally shows up to work ready to complete his job. He focusses on sniffing out narcotics and helping the police fight crime in Maryland. But this day the good boy just couldn’t get himself going. We’ve all experienced that.

Jango is a Belgian Malinois and is known for his high energy and work ethic. His nose can find anything and he is a huge asset to the police force.

The K9 was trained by Officer Ryan Costin and now spends his days hunting down bad guys and protects Costin. Jango’s enthusiasm for his work means that he normally beats his partner to the squad car…but not on warm days when sunshine is more inviting than drug crime.

Officer Costin tried his best to encourage his partner into the car, but Jango wanted to play instead.

No matter what Costin did, Jango refused to get into the car. He wanted to roll in the grass, smell flowers and play fetch. The sunshine and warm weather were too inviting, he did not want to work at all.

As Officer Costin continued his attempts to get Jango into the car, the dog looked at him as if to say:

“It’s not THAT important. The drug lords will still be there for us to catch after we play for a while.”

Costin’s wife filmed the whole event from a window in their house and seemed to be enjoying the scene very much. She also narrated the event. The added commentary makes the ordeal all the more hilarious. Officer Costin just can’t get his dog to cooperate with him!

Eventually, Costin decides to cut a deal with his dog…

If Jango gets in the car, Costin will reward him with some belly rubs. It seems that was all the encouragement Jango needed in order to get to work. Almost immediately after Jango gets his belly rubbed, he hopped into the police cruiser as if nothing had ever happened.

Costin’s wife comments from the window:

“So, all I need to get ready for work is a belly rub. Got it, check.”

Costin probably had to stay at work a little late, but it was all Jango’s fault. His wife even has video evidence of the unexpected delay!

The rest of the Anne Arundel County Sheriff’s Office heard about it and wanted to share it with the world.

They posted the video on Facebook with the caption:

“A beautiful Spring day makes the best Deputies want to play hooky!! Wes, we all love working at the Sheriff’s Office, but just like our human Deputies, when spring fever hits even our awesome K9’s just want to go to the park and lie in the cool grass and maybe play a little catch…or um fetch!!”

Officer Costin may want to consider waking up a little earlier to Jango is going to continue causing issues this season.

Of course, now that he knows the belly rub secret, that may not be necessary. Hopefully, Jango doesn’t change the terms of their agreement any time soon.

Costin isn’t worried about how this display of puppy-like behavior will translate to his job on the force. He knows that Jango will perk up when the workday gets moving. He just has to make sure to save plenty of time for playing when they are off the clock.
