K9 officers shot in the line of duty are praised for their heroic efforts

A pair of K-9 officers are being praised by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office after recently being shot in the line of duty. K-9 Ax and K-9 Endo are both recovering alongside their handlers from the incident. The accused was wounded by deputies and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

K-9 Ax and K-9 Endo are heroes.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood was quoted in a press release saying that Ax and Endo took bullets that were meant for his deputies.

“There is no doubt that K-9 Ax and K-9 Endo took bullets that were meant for my deputies,” Chitwood said in the release.

“If the deputies would have gone into the woods, the first person to come in contact with Singleton, without a doubt, would have been shot.”

Man carjacks Lyft driver.

21-year-old Shedrick Singleton is alleged to have stolen his Lyft driver’s minivan after asking to be driven to the Osteen area on Reed Ellis Road. He then forced the driver out of the van via gunpoint and took their phone as well. The Lyft driver later flagged down a passing motorist for help.

The stolen minivan was later spotted on Lake Helen Osteen Road. Police then tracked the suspect to a nearby set of apartments but he escaped into the woods.

K-9 Officer Ax and his handler, Officer A.J Davis, approached the suspect and he fired. Ax was hit in the face and the suspect moved deeper into the woods.

The Sheriff’s Office used drones, a helicopter, and an armored vehicle to search for the suspect. After about 90 minutes, they found him exiting the woods near the apartment complex once more. Officers then exchanged gunfire with the man, hitting him multiple times. K-9 Officer Endo was also hit during the exchange.

K-9 Officer Endo was shot in the paw and the chin. He is recovering after having been rushed to a local Veterinary Emergency Center. This is the second time Endo has been shot in the line of duty. He was awarded the VSO Medal of Valor and Purple Heart in 2015 after being shot while responding to a domestic violence call. Even after being injured, Endo never gave up pursuing the suspect.

As for Ax, he is also recovering. He was shot in the side of the face and immediately brought to receive medical treatment. The Daytona Beach Police Department sent their own K-9 unit to donate blood. Davis spoke with the media later and said that Ax is doing well.

“He shows signs of himself, gets a little spunky every now and then and then kind of slows down, but he’s doing excellent, you know, regardless,” Davis said about Ax’s condition.

“Again, I couldn’t tell you how much, the amount of blood that was in the back of the car, and for him to be here and, you know, he’s doing remarkably well.”
