Animal rescuers and volunteers in Ukraine team-up to save stranded dogs from flooded areas

Dogs depend on us as much as we depend on them. During emergency situations, dogs and other domesticated animals rely on nobody but humans for rescue.

Thankfully, we have never failed these poor creatures during their darkest moments when they felt like nobody was there to give them even a single pinch of care.

A devastating incident

On June 6, 2023, the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station in Ukraine was destroyed by what most people believed was a Russian missile strike. Although the exact cause is still under investigation, the Russian military forces denied the accusations but they have no enough evidence to support their defense.

Because of the dam’s destruction, a lot of people, animals, and the environment of Ukraine were extremely affected. The flooding has displaced thousands of people which resulted in their home pets being stranded in the flood.

It’s a hard choice to make for the affected families, after all, it was a matter of choosing between life and death.

Here come the capeless heroes

Ukraine’s animal rescue groups, military personnel, and other volunteers all sprung into action to rescue these poor animals.

In the wake of the devastating flooding caused by the collapse of the dam at the Kakhovskaya Hydroelectric Power Station, volunteers from Animal Rescue Kharkiv, an organization based in Ukraine’s Kharkiv province, wasted no time in preparing their equipment and mobilizing their efforts.

By Wednesday morning, they had arrived in the Kherson region, ready to rescue animals in distress.

Since the dam’s collapse, the team has successfully saved a total of 107 animals, including 45 dogs, 36 cats, five kittens, 18 chickens, and three goats. These fortunate animals will be relocated to various shelters across Ukraine. Many of them were beloved pets of evacuated civilians, as explained by Yaryna Vintoniuk, a spokesperson for the non-governmental organization.

The volunteers embarked on rescue boats, venturing into deserted areas to retrieve animals stranded on rooftops, trapped in apartments, or stranded in submerged garages. These capeless heroes’ noble efforts were not without danger, as they came under shelling from Russian forces while carrying out their rescue operations.

The animals they encountered had been inadvertently abandoned by their owners in the panic of the situation, leaving them terrified and traumatized. Some were so weak that they could barely muster the strength to stand.

Amidst the chaos, they discovered different dog breeds trapped almost everywhere above the water.

Not an easy rescue

Although they desperately needed help, some of the stranded dogs still imposed resistance from their rescuers. Some of them gave the rescuers the cold shoulder, while others tried keeping a decent distance away from the rescuers.

But none of those stopped them from their mission, with utmost care and tons of patience, they managed to bring all stranded animals to safety.

The dogs were obviously starving, feeling cold, and scared, but despite their hopeless condition, they still remained loyal to their owners by staying.

One online viewer couldn’t agree more, “Some are absolutely exhausted. Others have only broken houses left but still try to guard them. Dogs are the most loyal and best animals in the world. Thx for the rescue!”

Thanks to all the kindhearted rescuers, they’d see safer tomorrows and hopefully, they’d be reunited with their rightful owners.
