Keith Urban covers 70s hit song – lead singer weeps in the audience

If you don’t already know, the Bee Gees is a band that was absolutely iconic, particularly in the 70s. Their songs “Stayin’ Alive,” “How Deep is Your Love,” and “Night Fever,” among others, were groovy, disco-fever jams that music-lovers all around the globe just could not get enough of.

Decades after their wild success, an event that was filled with famous stars was held to pay tribute to the funk trio.

There were many terrific performances — Demi Lovato, Tori Kelly, Little Big Town and Andra Day sang a mashup of their hits, Ed Sheeran performed “Massachusetts,” Panic! At The Disco performed “Lonely Days,” and Celine Dion gave “Immortality” a whirl.

While there were so many memorable performances, one in particular really stood out and that was Keith Urban’s rendition of “To Love Somebody.”

Urban is a New Zealand-Australian singer-songwriter who is mostly known for his work in the country music scene (he is also the husband of the beloved Nicole Kidman!).

Most recently, he released his 10th studio album, Graffiti U, back in 2018.

We don’t want to spoil it for you, but his performance of “To Love Somebody” was absolutely spot-on. He started the whole thing with just himself and his electric guitar. As he noodled and played each chord perfectly, he also hit every note with ease and plenty of passion and emotion.

His performance was raw and stripped-down, which really let the audience sit in their feelings and process the beauty of the original song. You could tell that he was really happy to be there and was really enjoying every second of the performance.

Everyone in the audience was blown away, too. The whole thing was caught on video and every now and then, the clip would cut to someone watching in the crowd. Their faces were either in awe or smiling really big, just in disbelief of how beautiful it was.

The special was called “Stayin’ Alive: A GRAMMY Salute to The Music of The Bee Gees” and was aired by CBS.

The ceremony was held at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Center and many of the guests were celebrities or artists themselves, whether they were performing or simply attending to show support.

The celebration was actually in honor of the 40-year anniversary of the 1977 Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

If you don’t know, Saturday Night Fever is, much like the Bee Gees, an absolute classic. It is a film that stars John Travolta and its soundtrack, which was done by the group, is iconic. It was so good, it took home a Grammy for Album of the Year in 1978.

“To Love Somebody,” the song that Urban covered, was originally released in 1967 via the group’s debut album. As Urban sang and played his guitar, backup vocalists joined in to support him. Then the rest of his band jumps in for an absolutely electric performance that had everyone singing along.

The rest is magic.
