Kind custodian freezes when teachers give him the keys to his dream car and say “Its yours”

Chris Jackson is a custodian at the Unity Grove Elementary school.

The students and staff see him as the kind of person who would never hesitate to lend a hand to someone who needs it.

Chris didn’t have transportation of his own and would often have to walk to work. It was a long commute that added hours onto his day. The hard-working custodian no longer has to worry about that, however, thanks to a touching gesture made by the students and staff at the school.

Staff and students raised money to purchase a car for Jackson.

“We had buses, transportation, but I was quicker than the bus. It would add an hour, hour 45. And I was only an hour from my job. So for me, there’s no stopping me,” Chris said about his commute to 11alive.

“But I didn’t quit. I didn’t run away. I just stay. I put my pride aside. I just come to work, smile, be me,” he continued.

Despite his long journey to work every morning, Chris never let it get him down.

He always showed up to the school with a smile on his face and was ready to work. It was his positive attitude that endeared him to everyone there.

“There has never been a day where he has not come in with a smile on his face. The kids here adore him. They love Mr. Chris. And he just works so hard,” said special education teacher Jodi Combs.

A school is a community.

The teachers, the students, the staff, and the parents of a school make up a community. A good community looks out for those who need it and that’s just what the people did. They knew that Chris was struggling financially and while they couldn’t help him with all his needs, they decided to do what they could.

The school knew that Chris’ most immediate need was transportation.

Being able to drive to work rather than walk would make a big difference in his life.

“We heard that Chris had fallen on some hard times and we pulled together to help with his immediate needs,” Jodi continued.

After having purchased a Chevrolet Impala for him (they knew this was his “dream car”), some teachers decided to make a presentation of giving him the keys.

They asked Chris to follow them to the parking lot to help them with something.

Chris came along as he’s always willing to help.

They approached the car they had purchased for Jackson.

Then a teacher turned around and handed him the keys.

It took a few moments for Chris to realize what was happening. When he understood the kind gesture the staff had done for him, he was clearly touched.

“If y’all was in my body right now, I can’t move!” Jackson said in the Facebook post.

“I’m stuck. I’m really stuck.”

This wasn’t an act of charity but rather one of kindness. Chris had always been so kind and helpful with everyone at the school that he deserved to have something kind done for him in return. The folks from Unity Grove were just as happy to give Chris his dream car as he was to receive it.
