Compassionate landlord refuses to raise rent for tenants despite rising prices in the area
With this pandemic, people are losing jobs while the prices of our necessities have almost doubled since last year.
That is the reason why some people end up in the streets. Nobody wants to be homeless, but what can you do when you’ve lost your job, and your rent has increased?
Despite this harsh reality, one landlord from Las Vegas is going viral for not increasing his rent.
Even if other landlords in the area had raised their rent, Tom Trout, who is 71 years old, says he won’t do it. He won’t raise the rent on his property. His decision raised so many eyebrows. For most people, his decision was foolish, but is it?
Tom explains why he doesn’t intend to raise his rent. For him, all of his properties have already been paid. So what he earns from his tenants gets him by, and that’s all he needs.
If he would get the extra money from raising rent – then no thanks.
“I’ll do it my way, like Frank Sinatra says,” Trout, 71, said in his interview with Las Vegas Sun.
No matter how many people or other landlords would try to talk to him, he refuses to be influenced by them. Tom stands by his decision. This kind-hearted landlord has been known to even decrease rent over the years!
While all the other tenants try their best to raise the rent, Tom decreases his.
“I’ve never met a man like this in my life, and I’m getting ready to turn 78,” says Bill Donnelly, one of Tom’s long-time tenants said in his interview.
Why is Bill so happy? Well, when he moved into Trout’s four-bedroom apartment, he was paying $1,200. Then, the next year, Trout decreased it to $1,100.00, and the following year, that is correct, you have guessed it, Trout had decreased his rent again.
Until today, Bill Donnelly has only been paying $900 a month to this sweet landlord. For a veteran like Bill, Trout’s decision means a lot.
We all know how many veterans end up homeless, right? Trout knows the sacrifices of a veteran and seeing Bill comfortable and happy with his rental home, and then Trout is happy as well.
“He’s a veteran,” Trout explained. “I admire him. He served our country. And why should a landlord destroy the house that he lives in?”
Whenever there are minor issues in the house, Bill no longer asks Trout to have them fixed. Instead, he shoulders the repair fee. It’s his way to show how much he cares for the house and a way to say thank you as well.
Trout also explained that he would rather have friends and longtime tenants.
True enough, his tenants are all thankful that they were able to meet this kind-hearted landlord. For them, this means a lot.
This pandemic has brought us so many challenges. That’s why knowing that you have an understanding, kind, and caring landlord makes a huge difference.
We do hope more and more landlords would be inspired by Trout’s kind gesture. Watch his inspiring interview in the link below and don’t forget to share this with your friends and loved ones.
