Kind stranger on plane comforts 96-year-old grandma scared of flying

Like any form of public transportation, you encounter different kinds of people when you commute.

Flying is no exemption.

Sometimes, you encounter challenging passengers that will test your patience. But sometimes, you get to meet a flight angel – who is willing to help and assist fellow passengers.

That is what happened two years ago. A 96-year-old woman felt terrified after boarding a flight from San Diego to Nashville. To her rescue was a fellow passenger who served as her flight angel.

For most of us, flying may look easy. Some people ride airplanes so often that it may look like they are just riding a train. There are, however, some people who feel terrified when they are flying.

When that fear sets in, you can’t control it. Can you imagine what the old woman might have felt when she was on that flight?

It’s easy to say that she shouldn’t have boarded the plane in the first place, but according to Megan Ashley, the witness, and fellow passenger, the grandmother just wanted to be with her family so she could celebrate her birthday.

Ashley posted the touching story on Facebook, and her post went viral, having more than 332K likes and 84K shares.

It was July 2019, Virginia boarded a flight from San Diego going to Nashville with Southwest Airlines.

Virginia tried her best to stay calm, even sharing that she hasn’t flown for over 15 years and that it felt like her first time. She just wanted to celebrate her birthday with her family in August.

The moment the plane started to take off, she started feeling terrified. She asked the man sitting next to her if she could hold his hand during the take-off.

Without second thoughts, the man said yes.

“This gentleman I should say, gladly took her hand, let her hold onto him, calmed her by talking to her and explaining everything that was happening, and simply was that stranger there for her. He knew just what to do the entire flight to help.” Ashley posted on her Facebook account.

Ashley snapped a photo, and you could clearly see how scared Virginia was!

The man’s hands were very reassuring for the old lady. He was there, holding her hand, making sure that she stayed calm during the take-off. She even hugged him when the airplane was experiencing some turbulence.

Of course, the young gentleman didn’t hesitate to comfort the old lady.

If you think that’s already sweet, it didn’t stop there. He even helped Virginia to stand up when she wanted to go to the restroom. He even volunteered to hold her bag while she was gone.

He cared for her like she was his grandmother.

Once they arrived at their destination, the kind young man even helped Virginia get into her wheelchair. He made sure that she was safe and was with her daughter before he left.

“This man was her flight angel. He held her bag, helped her get off the plane and into the wheelchair and when she got confused wondering where her daughter went (she called her her sister), he stayed with her until she caught up with her daughter who got separated from her,” Ashley continued.

Virginia was so thankful for this kind young man that she even wanted to give her “flight pretzels” to him.

Ashley was so touched that she cried as she walked away from the airport. It was a different flight, a very memorable one. It’s seldom to see people who would choose to go out of their way to help and care for other people. Seeing this act of kindness just makes anyone’s heart happy.

People even shared their experiences with their own flight angels.
