Alabama mom Britney Tankersley first heard about “Twin Day” at her son’s school at 8 PM the night before when her kindergartener Myles told her he insisted that he and his best friend dress the same. Like any parent, she was annoyed at the late notice.

But being a good sport, she decided to find the boys matching outfits to wear the next day because Myles insisted they’d make the best twins since they looked so much alike.

The whole effort was made extra difficult by the fact that she had never met his friend and didn’t know his size. After an hour, she managed to track down his mom and then headed to the store.

“He went on and on about how they looked exactly the same,” Tankersley told TODAY. “‘We both have brown eyes, we both have dark hair,’ and he was just adamant … so I head to Walmart and I’m like, irritated. I’m like, this is too late. I’m too old for this.”

Myles “was adamant that they were identical,” according to her Facebook post the following day.

After all her trouble, she wanted a picture of the two together for her efforts.

When their teacher sent her the photo of the two besties in the “Future Leader” button-down shirts Tankersley bought the previous night and described as “the only decent shirts left” in their sizes, she teared up.

“My heart melted. Obviously two very different children, but Myles didn’t see that. Wouldn’t the world be such a better place if we could all view it through the eyes of a couple 5yr olds.”

The photo immediately went viral with over half a million Facebook reactions and over a quarter of a million shares.

“I was basically crying because it was so sweet,” she said. “Obviously, I know that they don’t look alike at all. But he didn’t see that, you know? I expect to get a picture of another white child with light skin and brown hair, whatever, but I didn’t get that at all. And I said ‘That is the sweetest thing in the whole world.'”

The kids and their classmates are excited about their newfound fame, but Tankersley was shocked at just how much attention her post received.

“It’s so crazy,” she told TODAY. “My objective is never to be in the spotlight, but I think the message is more important than how much it exploded.”

And the mom admits that the whole thing taught her an important lesson:

“I was kind of put in my place because I was expecting to see something totally different, and that’s not what it was at all.”

Commenters showed their love by praising the young boys and pointing out that the rest of us adults still have a lot to learn, even from a pair of kindergarteners.

“God bless them for showing adults how the world should be,” was a common sentiment.

A few days later, the boys’ parents realized that they lived just minutes away from each other so there have been a lot of playdates between the besties since their “famous” photo.
