Kittens roam freely in this Canadian bookstore – and customers can even bring them home
Okay, we’ve heard about “pet-friendly” cafes before. But have you ever been at a bookstore where kitties roam freely and you can even adopt them if you want?
Picture this: you’re browsing through the shelves to find the book you want to read next and you bump into a kitten. Well, the first thing that comes to mind is, of course, that it’s the owner’s pet, and you go on looking. Then another one pops up, and then another one, and so on. What’s going on?
In this case, you’re probably at Otis & Clementine’s Books and Coffee in Upper Tantallon, Nova Scotia. This second-hand bookstore has found the perfect way to promote cat adoption. The owners foster kitties from the South Paw Conservation, and they let them roam around their store freely. So, it just so happens that sometimes you may be seated at a table enjoying your coffee and having a kitten jumping on your lap for some snuggling.
Now, can you imagine anything better than your favorite book, a cup of coffee and a kitty? It’s a combination made in heaven, right?
And, what if you fall in love with a fluffball so much that you can’t leave it behind? Well, in that case, you can adopt it!
Now, don’t think that this is as simple as taking the cat in your arms and walking out of the door. No, you need to provide some references while you are adopting the kitten, plus you need to pay $255 (Canadian dollars). This amount includes medical expenses of your new buddy.
As the representative of the South Paw Conservation explains, the cats are checked by a vet, tested for feline leukemia, and dewormed as soon as they are rescued.
The bookstore starting the collaboration with the Conservation last year, and over this time, at least 30 kitties have been adopted- adoption rate at the bookstore is 100% currently. They plan to continue like this in 2020, which is pretty easy since, let’s be real, who wouldn’t want to adopt a kitty?
People who have visited the place have only positive feedback to give.
“I think it is a gem and a must visit. Happily the last group of kitties had found new homes. I can’t wait for the new ones to arrive,” someone wrote on their website, while someone else said: “It’s an awesome place to buy books and enjoy almond milk lattes. It also sometimes has kitties to cuddle.”
Customers obviously love to be around these feline fluffballs, and they would definitely come back for more cuddles and snuggles.
So, if you happen to be around Halifax, it might be worth a visit. Don’t forget to have some money on you because we bet you won’t be able to leave the place without a kitten in your arms!
This initiative has helped many rescues so far – and it will keep doing so in the future. Let’s hope others start to take their lead!
