Tiny stray kitten follows German shepherd home and picks her as her new mom

Motherhood is instinctive.

While most mothers become one once their child is born, there are others who are thrust into the calling because they chose to.

Oneā€™s drive to nurture and protect can break boundaries, even through the differences in species. It is a truly remarkable machination in nature and one dog owner is witness to all of that.

Lucie and Toast were on their way out when they saw a poor little kitten.

The feeble kitten looked scrawny and frail, but otherwise energetic and tame. As German shepherds are known to be hunters of smaller animals, the owner asked Toast to be gentle.

The kittenā€™s mother might just be nearby so Lucie made sure that Toast approached it calmly. After a quiet exchange of ā€œhellos,ā€ Lucie and Toast went back in.

Thatā€™s when the kitten followed them inside.

With its short legs and squeaky purrs, it jumped through the gate and plopped down in her yard. Expecting it to wander aimlessly inside the property, the kitten surprised them when it went to Toast instead.

Since then, it followed the dog around like a shadow. Wherever Toast goes, the kitten follows. No matter how far or how high up the stairs.

At that moment, the kitten decided that Toast was their mom.

But instead of chasing her off or treating it differently, Toast surprised her owner. When she fed Toast her morning meal, the dog just sat and watch the kitten go straight to the food.

She didnā€™t feel the need to ā€œprotectā€ her food. Rather, she intended to feed the kitten first before she ate the food herself.

She didnā€™t know when or how, but as soon as the two animals interacted, Lucie knew that they now have a special bond.

Toast began raising the kitten like her own.

They may be of different species but that doesnā€™t mean she canā€™t teach her a thing or two. Dogs arenā€™t particularly good at climbing compared to cats but that didnā€™t stop Toast from teaching the kitten how to get on the furniture.

She would push the little kitten up the steps or guide it down the steps. At one instance, the kitten even looked at Toast as if asking her if itā€™s doing a great job.

Toastā€™s motherly instinct only intensified from there.

Toast would become very anxious if the kitten is nowhere near her field of vision. She became quite protective of the kitten and it would manifest in amazing ways.

There was a time that the kitten started getting dangerously close to the pool’s edge. Seeing this, Toast quickly got up and took the kitten by the neck.

She picked up the kitten and took her to where she was sitting, far from the dangers of the pool.

It only made the owner realize how amazing animals are.

ā€œIā€™ve always felt that animals are super instinctive and nature is well done,ā€ she said to the animal channel The Dodo, ā€œToast especially, sheā€™s so human that she really just works on emotions.ā€

And while the difference between them is obvious, the motherly care she gave the kitten is the same as any mother would give to a child.
