We all know that cats are smart animals. Scientists are telling us that they are highly intelligent, but just how much they cannot say or prove, since they are very tricky to study.

However, cats always find ways to surprise and astonish us. Over the years, we have seen cats serving water to themselves, opening cages, drawers, and doing all sorts of things that one wouldn’t normally expect a cat to do. But, have you ever heard a cat mimic human speech? Wait, this is parrots’ privilege isn’t it? Well, maybe not anymore.

Bacon the calico kitty has been living with the Jones family for eleven years. Her mom, Barbara, still remembers the day when she opened the door and Bacon simply entered the house, as if she knew this would be her forever home.

“I heard a kitty just yelling outside my apartment. I opened the door and she ran in,” Jones told The Dodo. “Bacon picked me.”

Since then they have been inseparable, and Jones and her husband have found the perfect family pet in the eyes of the beautiful calico.

So some time ago something really funny happened. Bacon started “talking”. No, we’re not kidding! The cat started mimicking her humans’ expression when they see her food bowl empty.

But let’s see how it all started. Barbara and her husband used to feed Bacon as soon as they got up. They used to go to her food bowl and, when they saw it was empty they would say without thinking “uh-oh”!

“When we get up in the morning and go to feed her without thinking we would say, ‘Uh-oh! your bowl is empty,’” Barbara explained.

And then, one day, out of the blue they heard Bacon clearly say “uh-oh” when they approached the empty bowl. Apparently, to her this does not mean anything alarming, it’s just a reminder that there’s no food and the bowl needs to be refilled. So, more or less, it means “feed me”!

Mom and dad tried to make the cat say that again but she wouldn’t. Well, after all, it’s still a cat! But from then on, whenever Bacon wants to ask for food, she will do it by saying “uh-oh”! When Barbara or her husband ask “Do you want to eat?” they get the same answer.

In the video below, Bacon’s parents have filmed her saying the famous “uh-oh” and it’s adorable to watch! We could never imagine that a cat could mimic human sounds so well. But, as always, cats are here to prove everything we assume about them wrong!

Luckily, Bacon only needs to ask for food in her home- everything else, from hugs to belly and cheek rubs, can be found in abundance and she doesn’t even have to ask for them! What a lucky kitty! And how lucky her parents are to live with such a smart pet.
