Koala baby loses his mother in the bushfires – then compassionate dog comes to his rescue

We all know that dogs are man’s best friend. But did you know that their love extends to other animals? This koala baby knows from first-hand experience.

So many koalas have suffered due to the Australian bushfires. Many thousands of them have succumbed to the devastation. But there are also many amazing stories of koala rescue. This story might be the most amazing of them all.

One day, a volunteer and their dog, Keli, were in the Australian outback. They were rescuing koalas and other animals who had been displaced due to the intense flames.

The volunteer’s dog came up to him with something in his mouth.

Keli had found and gently lifted up a koala joey from somewhere unknown. Clearly, the dog could smell the animal and gone out of her way to rescue the poor creature.

The volunteer could see that the koala joey was in a bad way and rushed him to an animal hospital.

At the animal hospital, the vets had some bad news. Due to the smoke, the koala joey had developed a bad infection. But the vets were dedicated to doing all that they could for the animal.

They treated the infection, and to their amazement, it worked. The baby soon became much healthier.

The koala joey had also come to the hospital being badly underweight. In fact, he only weighed half a pound when he came in. But the baby kept on eating and soon was able to regain his strength.

The vets decided to name the koala after the dog that had rescued him, Keli.

Eventually, the vets became sure that Keli would recover. They posted this news onto Facebook, saying “It will be a long process, and we are confident that he will develop into a healthy koala before release into the wild.”

And Keli kept on getting better. In a few weeks, the animal had put on plenty of weight. Soon he reached a healthier two pounds.

There were also no signs of his infection.

Keli will be well looked after until he reaches the weight of five and a half pounds.

Then the animal hospital will begin the process of reintroducing the animal back into the wild. First, they will put him in a safe area until he is able to go fully into the wild.

Keli, the dog, is an amazing animal. She could see that there was another living being in dire need of rescue. And her actions led to the baby’s life being saved. Anyone who doubts that dogs have big hearts should hear her story.

The vets who saved Keli the koala’s life work for Koala Hospital Port Macquarie.

Understandably, the hospital has been stretched to breaking point recently. But the hard-working vets have been able to save many, many koalas like Keli.

Clearly, the hospital needs all of the support it can get.

There are a couple of ways that people can help out. People can visit the hospital’s website to donate money, adopt a koala or even volunteer if they live close to Port Macquarie.

If only all koalas could be rescued like Keli. They have suffered from the bushfires, and it’s likely that they will continue to do so for some time.
