Labrador dad takes his puppies down to the water and gives them their first swimming lesson
One thing is for sure about Labrador retrievers, they love the water. Bred for this ability, Labradors have been helping outdoorsman retrieve waterfowl and fish for centuries. Plus, their friendly nature makes them easy to train.
So, when one Labrador dog dad decided to take his pups down to the water for a swim, it was only natural that the puppies took to the water right away.
A dog dad teaches his puppies how to swim
Best of all, the whole adorable incident was captured on camera. As the dog dad approaches the water, his puppies are at first a little reluctant to go into the water. Following close behind their dad, only one of the puppies bravely follows his dad into the water, swimming happily alongside him.
The other puppies gather on the shore, watching the two have all of the fun. Soon, though, some of the other puppies begin to join in.
Bred for life in the water
Fortunately, for the six puppies and their dad, swimming in the water comes so naturally for the Labrador retriever breed. This is because their bodies are specially adapted for this task. The toes of a Labrador are webbed, which allows the, to easily swim through the water.
Their ability to swim is also helped along by the breed’s otter-like tail. A Labrador’s large tail helps them easily steer through the water, and in combination with their webbed toes makes them one of the quickest canines in the water, great for swimming and retrieving things.
Getting in their daily exercise
As for their first lesson from dad, the puppies did an awesome job. Once their dad showed them how easy it was, they jumped into the water without fear. They even took time out from their foray into the water to run a few laps around the pond itself.
A day in the water
In the video, which has over 3.8 million views, the puppies and their dad run around in the high grass found around the swimming hole. They play for a little while before heading back into the water, this time for a longer swim.
And it seems that the longer they are in the water, the easier the whole idea of swimming comes to them.
All in a day’s work
Someday, the puppies will be in the position to teach puppies of their own all about the water and learning to swim. And it is all thanks to their dad, who seems more than happy to show them all how to do it. All in a day’s work for this dog dad.
