Woman had no idea landlord intended to leave her house after renting 20 years

How would you feel if someone told you that you owned a nice piece of property in the city?

John Perrett was a wealthy man.

The Melbourne pharmacist owned property at St. Albans in Melbourne, Australia and he wanted to leave a legacy behind.

Perrett planned to donate all his assets to the Royal Melbourne Hospital after passing away.

This made one of his tenants, Jane Sayner, worried about her future living situation.

Then Jane got an unexpected call.

It was from Perrett and his solicitor. Though she was scared she might lose her two-bedroom flat, Jane answered the call from her landlord.

She did not expect that John was calling to ask her for her name, and expected what came next even less.

She would be the new owner of her unit. It shocked Jane, who was at her flat when she learned about the news.

John was a man with an incredible heart.

Aside from Jane, another long-term tenant received a unit as written in John’s last will.

Almost everyone had a fair share of his assets, even a handyman who had been with him for a long time.

What a remarkable act of kindness!

Mr. Perrett deserves to be remembered.

“I still sometimes think, did this really happen?” Jane told A Current Affair.

Sayer just recovered from an operation for bowel cancer and was given clearance for the meantime.

To make ends meet, Jane works at Costa, where she served until she was in her 70s.

Now that John has given her his unit, she does not need to think about where to live.

They found a friend in each other.

Jane appreciates her landlord, which is why she also takes care of his property and treats it as if it was her own.

In return, during the time that John’s health started deteriorating, the other units were taken under an agent, except hers.

Sayner recalls the time were she would drop by the nursing home to pay her rent and would chat with him.

John was simple and conservative.

He lived a plain life and refused to buy expensive or unnecessary things for himself.

His loyal tenant recalls how hard it was for him to replace his television even though it was malfunctioning.

He is an old-school type of businessman. Jane also shares how John prefers having cash as payment despite the availability of other modes.

Perrett only agreed to bank transfer transactions months before he died.

Lost but never forgotten.

John Perrett died at the age of 86 in September 2020.

He did not have a family of his own, but the people whom he had helped were thankful for his generosity.

His good deeds will always remain in their hearts.

Thankful beyond words.

Jane is now living a simple and peaceful life. She may not have a grandiose lifestyle but her landlord did more than enough for her.

Sayner has already retired from her work and now focuses on how to preserve the property she received.

Indeed, a simple gesture of kindness goes a long way.
