Happier employees in the workplace tend to deliver better performance, so ensuring that they’re taken care of is one of the top priorities of a business owner.

Sometimes, they’ll go the extra mile.

A landscaping company did just that.

They did it by passing out unexpected bonuses to their employees for Christmas.

Ruppert Landscape has been in the industry for 5 decades.

Its headquarters is in Laytonsville, Maryland, serving clients through its 30 branches across the Eastern United States.

As stated on their website, their business principle is always to put their people first.

They put money where their mouth is.

Their business principle applies not just to their clients, but to their employees as well.

“Our goal as a company is not just to build beautiful landscapes, but to develop and grow our people,” their statement said.

It’s an “Appreciation Bonus.”

All their employees across the 30 branches were gathered in one big room to celebrate Christmas.

Little did they know that a surprise awaits them in the form of a check.

The bonus was given to everyone in the company’s employ, from their workers up to top management.

And ranging between $7,000 and $200,000 for over 1,000 employees.

Talk about investing in your people.

The amount of the bonus was based on the years of service of an employee and their salary.

It was funded through a recent partnership with Knox Lane, an investment firm.

“Everyone receiving this bonus was instrumental in helping create the value that we’ve been able to realize,” said CEO Craig Ruppert in the company presser.

The announcement was made internally across the 30 branches of Ruppert Landscape.

Everyone was happy to be there.

The CEO dubbed the bonus as “well-deserved” and it was also his way to show he values and acknowledges the people behind the landscaping company’s success.

“Our philosophy has always been to take great care of our employees, who in turn will take great care of our customers,” shared Phil Key, President of Ruppert Landscape. “Every team member at Ruppert is committed to excellence every day.”

It was not their average bonus.

The surprise bonus was added on top of the employee’s annual year-end bonus, their regular benefits, and 401(k).

They also get bonuses with their paid time-off and holidays, and medical insurance.

The company’s roots date back to the 1970s, when Craig Ruppert was still a teenager. He began cutting grass and weeding neighbors’ yards to earn money.

The company has gone a long way. They cater to residential and commercial lots.

As a rule of thumb, the people and their ethics are what make a business successful and long-lasting. And investing in your people properly will make that happen.

If you’re starting your own business and already have a few people to work with you, invest in them.

Take care of their well-being and sure enough, they will take care of the business and the clients. Ruppert Landscape shows us just that.
