Elderly laundromat owners hit internet fame by modeling customers' forgotten clothes

The saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” has always been true – especially so in recent years.

As more and more of us are becoming conscious of the impact of fast fashion on the planet, we’re all making the effort to buy second-hand and vintage items.

Pre-loved clothing apps have boomed this year, and thrift store shopping is back on trend. But second-hand clothing stores aren’t the only place to get your hands on some good-quality pre-loved clothing.

Hsu Sho-Er, 84, and her husband, Chang Wan Ji, 84, own Wansho Laundry in Taiwan.

The pair see a fair deal of forgotten clothing piling up in their laundromat, and most people don’t bother to come back and collect their items.

It seemed like a waste for Hsu and Chang to throw out the clothes, and they figured there was a better idea than donating them all, too.

Naturally, Hsu and Chang decided to wear the forgotten clothes themselves – and they look like models!

In June this year, the couple’s grandson—who sees himself as their unofficial stylist— created an Instagram account to show off his grandparents’ stylistic outfits.

While Hsu and Chang still donate the majority of the clothes, there are some outfits that are just too perfect not to wear themselves.

Reef Chang, the couple’s grandson, arranged the outfits and started photographing his grandparents wearing them.

He didn’t have high hopes for the photoshoot, but it turned out that Hsu and Chang were naturals! From their natural poses and easy smiles, it was as if they’d been modeling forever.

The couple didn’t have to go too out of their comfort zone with the photoshoot, either – in fact, they didn’t even have to leave the front door of their laundromat.

If you’re looking for something to brighten your mood today, you really should check out the couple’s Instagram.

It’s bursting with shots of Hsu and Chang wearing blouses, oversized t-shirts, skirts, Converse sneakers, sunglasses, neckties, caps, and other fancy items of clothing.

Reef should definitely get some recognition as his grandparents’ stylist. He has the rare ability to put together an assortment of clothes that really shouldn’t go together, but look great when worn.

The greatest thing about Hsu and Chang’s fashion choices is that they’re all intended for a younger crowd.

Somewhere along the line, it became the norm for older people to wear the same understated skirts, cardigans, and pullovers, with not a pop of color or a hint of a new trend in sight.

With his daring styling, Reef proved that his grandparents – and anyone else their age – can wear “young people’s” clothes too – there’s no age limit on the price tag!

The couple has become an Instagram sensation, with more than 600,000 followers.

They’ve even been projected onto walls in a local train station.

They’ve managed to stay humble, though – and apparently, getting paid by customers is still the most important thing to Chang.
