Lawyer spills the beans on why people may want to avoid using self-checkouts

Have you ever tried using one of those self-check-out counters?

Maybe yes, or maybe not, but whatever you prefer, you should know what this lawyer has to share to safeguard yourself.

Most customer experiences aren’t impressive.

As of 2021, there were numerous errors encountered during checkouts, and it became a common meme in social media.

Due to enhanced technology, it is expected that these glitches were already addressed, but in reality, those installed machines do not deliver up to par.

They are expensive and often malfunctioning, which results in problems rather than solutions.

In addition to its costly price, self-checkout machines have mechanical failures, which cause theft cases in stores.

Their “malfunctions” could land you in hot water.

These units were created to lessen the amount of human labor, particularly those behind the register.

However, despite its negative feedback, many companies still invest in them.

Many businesses still find it better to ask customers to work in the register rather than hiring additional labor for it.

They even use such features to attract customers by lowering their prices which are compensated by less number of people needed to run the store.

The use of self-checkout machines can be traced back to the early 1900s.

During this time, Piggly Wiggly is a supermarket that allows people to walk around different aisle sections.

Once they are done getting what they need, they will check themselves out and pay at the register without supervision.

The self-service supermarket was the first model for such a system, and a decrease of around 66% in labor costs for cashiers was observed.

But according to a lawyer, these kinds of counters are used by big corporations to criminalize customers and have grounds for charging theft.

Who wants to be charged for theft post-purchase?

Lawyer Carrie Jernigan has some thoughts.

She shares in her TikTok account that issue regarding the manipulative implication of some megastores for those who use their self-checkout cashiers.

As a criminal defense lawyer, Carrie discourages the use of these types of machines when checking out from stores.

She revealed that thefts who had been using this kind of technique had already improved over time which pushed the big companies to make strict rules when using it for purchases.

Thus, these large establishments are no longer lenient to those who unintentionally make an error using a self-checkout machine.

Even innocent customers are being accused.

This hefty allegation stands even though they forgot an item in their cart or it was just an honest mistake of incorrectly scanning the item.

Jernigan added the fact that these companies would no longer make time to find out if a client actually did or did not do it on purpose.

On top of that, some establishments falsely accuse customers, especially if they encounter inaccuracy during inventory.

The sad reality…

Even though your charges might get dropped, you still have to waste resources and time to clear up your name.

Many of Carrie’s followers have attested to this kind of situation, and their stories are more than enough to convince you to stay away from using self-checkout counters.

Whatever your stand on the matter, it would be best to protect yourself from possible future problems should you choose to make use of such technology.

Always be keen on your transactions and be smart about your decisions!
