Little boy knocks on neighbor's door with sweet request to fill void of deployed dad
For many of us, chores were a core part of our early lives.
Being a member of the family meant that even if you were a kid, you had to do your part around the house. Helping to cook, clean, and doing yard work are typical tasks that helped many of us develop a strong work ethic early on. Chores are an important activity for children to feel useful and close to their parents.
This was the case for Brian Kelly until his Dad was deployed to Syria.
Before deployment, the father and son duo bonded over doing chores together.
When Mr. Kelly left for Syria, Brian began looking for other people to help! This sweet little boy clearly learned such selflessness from his brave Dad.
It wasn’t long before Brian noticed his neighbors, the Cravens, cleaning up their yard. Brian went over to offer a helping hand as soon as he could!
The neighbor, Dean Craven, would have never turned down Brians earnest offer!
Since chores were something Brian and his dad always spent time on together, Mr. Craven saw this as an opportunity to be there for Brian while he was missing his dad. Mr. Craven is the father of three daughters, so he was happy to oblige and enjoy some classic father-son activities. Brian now comes over every day to help with yard work!
And since that first day, they have started playing sports like basketball and golf!
Mr. Craven is doing his part to fill the role of Brian’s dad while he is absent. Dan Kelly, Brian’s dad would surely be happy to know that his neighbor was willing to be there for his boy while he is away serving their country.
Recently, U.S. troops like Dan have begun coming home from Syria. We should all be hopeful that he will be stateside again soon! For now, we can be relieved that Brian has a caring role model in his life right next door.
Meanwhile, one of Mr. Cravens’s daughters, Molly, has captured some of Brian’s heartwarming acts of kindness.
She took to Twitter to share this story with us, and many people have since caught wind of this uplifting news.
Twitter users were thrilled with Mr. Craven’s kindness and Brian’s generosity. One of Molly’s tweets has even been liked over 20000 times!

Parents are amazingly strong and selfless people who have a deep understanding of children.
Mr. Craven is not only a great parent but a great person for recognizing a child who he could help and doing so without question! Brian’s mom knows that this situation is temporary and she is thankful for Mr. Craven being a positive male role model for Brian in the meantime!
Only those who have experienced having a loved one being deployed can understand what it’s truly like, but we can all understand that more often than not, there are little things we can do to provide for others.
All it takes is keeping an eye out for opportunities to offer a helping hand, just like Brian and Mr. Craven!
