Mom notices his son stops playtime and bends down in prayer – realizes it's for his grandpa
While the world is in the grasp of Coronavirus and our news feeds are overwhelmed by reports of rising infection rates, it can be easy to feel helpless.
Most of the world’s population has been forced to stop working and as a result, many of us are looking for ways to do our part. In many cases, the most that an individual can do is self-quarantine and pray for good news.
One little boy who’s family has been struck particularly hard by COVID-19 has been doing exactly that, all by himself. His name is Owen Hanes and he is a shining example of staying calm during the pandemic.
Since the outbreak began, five members of the Owens family have contracted Coronavirus.
His Paulus family relatives, Owen’s aunt, uncle, cousin, and grandparents were all infected around the same time. They all reported early symptoms, but apparently each person had a different experience.
“Every one of us, out of all four of us — our chief complaint was something different,” Bob Paulus, the uncle, told WTOL. “We were able to interconnect that I had something similar with my mom or my wife had something similar with my dad, but at the time, we weren’t able to connect all the dots.”
The majority of them got only experienced minor symptoms and recovered rather quickly.
In fact, Owen’s grandma and uncle have since tested negative for the active virus and positive for the antibodies. Meanwhile, his uncle and aunt have been able to return to work and take their son home with them. Unfortunately, things didn’t go so smoothly for Owen’s grandpa, Chuck.
The elderly man spent more than a month in the hospital, most of that time in the Intensive Care Unit in a deep coma. It was not an easy experience for any of his loved ones.
During this trying time, Owen’s mom, Brandee Hanes, noticed Owen sitting calmly next to his toy trucks which he had piled on the glass outdoor table. His hands were folded together at his forehead, and Mrs. Hanes was in awe.
Owen had taken it upon himself to pause playtime to pray for his Opa to return to good health.
Mrs. Hanes snapped a picture of him and posted it on Facebook, asking her community to join her son in prayer.
“If I may ask, please say a little extra for the grandkids. All they know is Opa is very sick and they miss him dearly!!”
The reaction by the Facebook community has been remarkable. Hundreds of people have liked the post and dozens of people have left uplifting comments wishing the stricken family good. Since then her Dad’s condition has improved and she has happily updated her online friends with the good news.
A couple of days ago, she posted an older family photo, paired with an update on his health. She said he had become more alert and the hospital staff had even tried to take him off the ventilator to see if he could breathe without mechanical support!
Unfortunately, it was too early for that, but it was a good sign that they even tried.
Mrs. Hanes also shared a funny incident from the hospital. While still in a medically induced coma, the nurses discovered that Opa has ticklish feet!
“Something funny that happened today was the nurses asked if Dad had any kind of sensitivity to his feet because every time they touch them Dad jumps and moves his legs. We laughed so hard. If you know Dad, he is EXTREMELY ticklish on his feet and HATES them being touched,” she wrote.
While the road to recovery has not been perfectly smooth or simple, the outcome looks good for Opa Chuck.
His grandson’s prayers will soon be answered and we can all admire this little boy for his mental positivity!
