5-year-old boy finds his mother unconscious and saves her life using Alexa device
Last month, a five-year-old boy made national headlines after saving his mother’s life using an Alexa virtual assistant.
Tyrion Spann lives with his mother Jasmine Neal in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, roughly one hour from his maternal grandmother. A few weeks prior to the incident, Tyrion’s grandmother, Natalie, had visited the family and gotten her nails done by her daughter, a nail tech, while she was there. In an interview with The Intelligence, Natalie recalled the moment:
“As Jasmine’s doing my nails, Tyrion says to me, ‘We need to put your name in there. He wanted to put my name in their Alexa so he could just say my name if he wanted to call me.”
Tyrion’s household didn’t have a landline, and his mother’s cellphone used a lock code – so, using the Alexa device was the perfect way for Tyrion to call his grandmother whenever he wanted. Little did they know how important that one small decision would be.
Roughly one week after the visit, Natalie received a frantic phone call from her grandson.
At first, it sounded like the boy was laughing and yelling, but she soon realized he was crying hysterically. “Gigi, mommy’s not waking up,” a frightened Tyrion cried. “I think mommy’s having a seizure!”
Jasmine had been experiencing seizures since last December when she seized while driving her vehicle and ran into a parked car. Although Tyrion had heard his family discuss the seizures, he had never seen his mother have one in person.
Tyrion’s grandmother was immediately frightened by the news.
“As a parent with a child who has epilepsy, who lives on her own, that’s a call I didn’t want to get because it could be anything,” Natalie told ABC Action News.
She immediately told her grandson she was calling 911. The 911 attendant told Natalie to tell Tyrion to go check on his mother to see if she was breathing. Of course, the five-year-old wasn’t sure exactly what to do. “He said he didn’t know how. I said, ‘Tyrion, you need to get on that bed and help mommy!'”
Natalie also advised her grandson to unlock the front door so paramedics could enter the residence. Once an ambulance arrived, Jasmine was transported to the Pottstown Memorial Medical Center with her heroic son right by her side.
Upon awakening, Jasmine had no recollection of what had occurred.
When doctors and family relayed the events, all she said, softly, was: “My baby saved me.”
Later, Jasmine took to Facebook to share her incredible story. In a post dated September 21, she wrote:
“So I’m in the hospital again. This boy saved my life!!! I’m so so so proud of him. He is my hero.”
As mentioned, Tyrion is only five years old. The young boy also suffers from a functional speech impairment, a lisp, which means he receives specialized schooling for his disability. The family, for their part, are beyond proud of the little boy’s actions – and they all consider it lucky that they just so happened to program the Alexa device the week before the incident.
“I’m so proud of you, my prince,” Jasmine wrote. “I love you higher than the sky, deeper than the sea, around the world and back again, forever and ever.”
