“We had to delete more unkind comments directed at this child than we have ever had to deal with in over a decade on Facebook.”

Those words came from Gentle Carousel, one of the biggest equine therapy programs in the world. They bring horses to over 25,000 children and adults in medical care facilities around the country.

“Revolting” is one of the better words to describe people’s behavior as they hid behind their screens to launch racist, political, and medically dangerous comments at a sweet photo of a black child wearing a protective mask alongside a therapy horse.

Truly vile human beings used the post as an opportunity to show their worst instincts, proving that not only do we need a common-sense revolution in our country (and around the world) but that the current Black Lives Matter movement is clearly making people who feel threatened by something as simple as equality show their “true colors.”

And those colors are ugly.

We’re not going to share the specific comments since they don’t deserve more attention.

A few things should go without saying, the first being that insulting children is disgusting. It says far more about the person launching the insult that it could ever say about the child in a photo.

The charity’s director, Debbie Garcia-Bengochea told Bored Panda:

“When our horses make a hospital visit they do not care about a patient’s race, politics, finances or religion. They love unconditionally. Some humans could learn a lot from little horses.”

Luckily, the charity deleted AND shut down the haters, showing them there was no room for them on a page for positivity. It looks like they’ll have to go back to their empty lives now.

In the midst of a pandemic – a moment when we should at the very least be working to protect our fellow countrymen if not ourselves – others found a reason to criticize the little girl’s mask. You know, the thing that helps save lives.

“There were also comments demanding that the face mask on the child be removed…the face mask was given to her by medical professionals. Since those who posted were NOT MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS, WE deleted their posts as well. Seeing an adult or child wearing a mask does not mean they are making a liberal or conservative, left or right, Republican or Democrat statement. It often means that the person is sick, cares for someone who is sick or elderly or just wants to protect others. Demanding that a mask be removed is unacceptable on social media or in-person” Garcia-Bengochea said.

It’s unbelievable that anyone would have to point that out right now.

The fact that we politicize human safety and good deeds is a new low.

But the charity wasn’t about to let negativity rule on their page, especially on such a wholesome photo. And they weren’t about to let the need to wear masks go ignored.

“Our social media has always been a positive and safe place for people of all ages. Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses work with vulnerable populations. Our volunteers wear face masks to protect those they serve. It is not a political statement. It is a compassionate one.”

It’s pretty clear that the trolls who made these comments feel that no lives matter. And that says a lot about them and how their own lives are going.
