Girl wears 1950s dress to school then teacher learns about her family’s special tradition

Traditions offer a sense of identity and belongingness to a family. They inspire positive feelings as well as memories they can share with each other. Traditions also serve as a unique bonding experience for the entire family and its next generation.

For one family based in Colorado, their unique tradition involves a yellow-and-purple dress.

A four-year-old girl named Caroline Hirt was one of the latest girls to wear the outfit on her first day of kindergarten. For most of the people who saw her that day, there was nothing extraordinary about what she was wearing.

At first, she wasn’t too thrilled to know she’ll be wearing it.

She’s a little fashionista. She’s quite deliberate with her clothing choices.

When the little girl saw the photos of her mom and the other family members wearing the dress, she changed her mind. However, she had her conditions.

First, she’d be pairing the dress with her favorite boots. Also, she refused to put her hair in pigtails just like the other girls did.

Jenny’s older daughter wore the same dress.

Ally was quite excited to wear the dress. She loves hand-me-downs, particularly those that come from other family members. And just like the other girls who wore it before her, she looks super cute in it. The color suited her well. And with her bright smile, she’s clearly super happy to be a part of the family tradition.

The dress is a family heirloom.

It has already been passed down for three generations. And the most surprising part? It has already crossed seven states. It has traveled from Saline to Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, Colorado, and Florida.

Back in 1981, Caroline’s mom, Jenny Hirt, also wore the same dress on her first day at kindergarten. She even matched it with a purple headband.

Traveling across different states, the dress had experienced some wear and tear.

When Jenny was doing minor repairs on the dress, she noticed that the buttons have been move around at least three times. She thought it was her family’s way to make the dress fit the girls.

The dress survived and it’s still looking good up to this day. This just proves how well the family takes care of it.

Jenny’s great-aunt started the tradition.

Marthe Esch was the first person to wear the dress. It was carefully handmade and sewn particularly for her first day of school in 1950.

The dress has a really cute design.

It has a purple plaid fringe and flower detailing. At the back, there’s a cute bow. Overall, the dress somehow resembles that of Anne of Green Gables.

The family has other traditions.

Musical instruments, furniture, recipes, and other clothes were passed along. It was such a nice experience for each of them since they are history-rich and valuable hand-me-downs.

For example, when one of the women had her first pregnancy, she received boxes from her mother. They were filled with lots of children’s clothes and toys. Her mom kept them for years as she was waiting for her to have her first child.
