To cheer children up on lockdown, this mailman wears a different costume every day
Everyone is suffering in some shape or form during this current pandemic. Businesses are financially struggling, workers are losing their jobs, and healthcare workers are being tirelessly overworked.
Let’s not forget another group that is suffering greatly from this unfortunate situation: children.
Children are supposed to be in school right now but instead, it is necessary that they are being homeschooled. This causes them to miss out on essential social experiences with friends, it will probably affect their learning ability, and some children even depended on meals provided by their school to eat.
There is no doubt that children all over the globe are feeling a little down during this time. It is completely understandable. The time that they spend hanging out with friends and participating in school projects is precious!
A local mailman, Jon Matson from Sunderland in the United Kingdom, saw a need and decided to fill that need.
When he was delivering mail, he would notice that everyone’s moods were a bit more down than usual (understandably so).
So he thought he could get creative with his line of work and knock out two birds with one stone. Why not also make little kids’ days by dressing up in fun and usually bizarre costumes, in addition to delivering important mail?
Every single day without a fail, the 39-year-old who is also a father of two of his own children, has been figuring out a different costume to don before heading out to fulfill his duty.
He has dressed as a Viking, a cheerleader, a gladiator, Little Bo Peep and more.
“From doing my rounds every day I’ve got to know people well and I saw how their moods changed. I had a drawer full of outfits so I thought why not dress up and cheer them up,” Matson told ITV News.
“It’s been fantastic. It’s been so lovely to be able to bring a smile back to my customers’ faces,” he continued.
Matson’s decided to get dressed as a cheerleader for his first round and right after that, people had been waiting to see what or who he would dress as next.
It turned into a fun little treat for everyone involved. It was something that his community could look forward to. A little bit of joy each day!
“Of course, as a key worker, I’m obviously worried about the coronavirus. That’s always in the back of mind but I have to keep it there and carry on. By doing this and seeing my customers smiles it’s helping me to keep my spirits up too,” Matson said.
The father initially planned to dress up just a few times a week but because the reaction was so strong and because everyone loved it so much, he ended up doing it every single day.
If that’s all that it takes to bring some joy to suffering people, then why not do it?
We love how brave and selfless this mailman is. Instead of dreading his work in fear, he is making it fun for everyone involved and even helping to spread a little bit of hope!
