While eating dinner at Brad’s Bar-B-Que in Oxford, Alabama, one woman had something incredible happen. As the elderly woman walked into the restaurant, three young men follow her into the diner. What happened next was pretty amazing.

Eleanor Baker is a widow living in Oxford, along with her dog, Rufus.

Her husband passed away some time ago and she didn’t have any family in town, despite having a large family. To put matters plainly, she is lonely. Most times she sits alone and her only company is her dog.

When she walked into Brad’s that evening for dinner, she would have never expected what happened.

Eleanor believes that God sent her into that restaurant that day.

“It was a God thing. I think God sent me there [as an example that] people care about other people and how important it is.”

As she sat in the booth by herself, the three young men that followed her in approached the table. Jamario Howard, one of the young men in the group, had seen her and knew she felt lonely.

Instead of feeling sad and carrying off on his own, he decided to go sit with her!

He noticed just how alone she looked and took matters into his own hands.

“He just came up and he said ‘I saw you sitting over here alone’ and he said ‘do you mind having some company?’” Baker narrates.

Eleanor responded with an enthusiastic YES! She would absolutely love it if someone would sit with her! Soon, the four people found themselves enjoying a meal and deep in conversation.

Even on their way home, the three young men couldn’t help but think about Eleanor.

“When you make that kind of connection with somebody, it’s hard to let it go,” said JaMychol Baker.

They knew that they had made a connection and were happy to play a part in an otherwise lonely day on her end. The kindhearted thing turned out to be more than just a kindness – they all actually had fun!

The three guys had originally planned on just keeping her company because they knew she was sad, but in the end they stayed because they truly enjoyed sitting with her!

As their food came and the time went by, they found themselves enjoying the conversation and having a great time hanging out together. By the end of it, they even admitted they felt a bit like her long-lost grandchildren!

Jamario, the one to originally ask Eleanor if it was ok to sit with her, has wanted to change the world since he was a kid.

He isn’t rich or famous, but he knows that little things and actions add up, especially if lots of people do it.

“I’m not rich. I’m not famous. And I’m not very smart either, so I can’t be president. But we can show the world it’s alright to be kind,” he said. “And then, before long, maybe the world will be a much better place.”

Now, the friends have dinner as often as they can!
