Longest shelter dog has the biggest smile on his face while sleeping when he finally gets a family

How can we describe Petey? Well, he’s definitely a ray of sunshine.

No matter how many trials life would bring him, his eyes were full of hope, and despite his extended stay in a small-capacity shelter, he never shied away from loving the people and animals around him.

Petey, despite his adorable appearance, was overlooked for a long time.

He didn’t have any potential adopters, and he was already one year old, making him the oldest resident in a small county shelter based in North Carolina.

The small shelter, Stanly County Animal Protective Services, had already reached its maximum capacity, and they knew Petey had extended his stay.

Since there was no lineup of potential adopters, they called the SPCA of Wake County

They inquired if the shelter could take Petey in and hopefully, give him the forever home that he truly deserves.

Of course, the SPCA agreed to take Petey and eight other cats.

Upon arriving at their new shelter home, Petey and his eight feline friends were introduced to the shelter’s staff.

“As soon as he got here, he was yanking on the leash trying to get through the door,” SPCA of Wake County Spokesperson Samantha Ranlet shared with The Dodo. “He bounded into the building.”

After getting to know Petey, all the staff of the SPCA was confused.

Petey was a happy, playful, and charming dog. They couldn’t believe people would just pass him by.

“He was super friendly from day one and very playful,” Ranlet recalled. “We couldn’t believe that nobody wanted him.”

Upon meeting Petey, you’ll love how playful he was. He would not shy away from people. In fact, he would play and would just give you the most adorable face.

The staff of the SPCA of Wake County wasted no time. They posted a photo of Petey and his availability on Facebook.

Everyone hoped that somewhere, a fur parent would match Petey.

The staff knew that most adopters would prefer smaller dogs. So that concerned them a lot.

Thankfully, just after a few weeks of posting Petey, someone messaged them.

Petey didn’t even stay at the SPCA for a month.

This dog’s new owners saw his adorable face, and they fell in love. They knew they couldn’t wait any longer. They had to get Petey.

When they got Petey home, he immediately got comfortable. He loved each member of the family and showed everyone that they made the right choice.

Petey loved his own cozy bed, and he fell asleep smiling.

Their new family member loved hanging around their huge yard and of course, he wouldn’t pass a game of fetch.

Aside from that, Petey boy loved cuddles and kisses.

As a bonus, Petey got along with his new doggy brother.

“He’s the perfect addition. Petey is so loved and is opening up and showing us his beautiful personality. I am so happy to have him,” his new family and owner said in their interview with The Dodo.

The SPCA of Wake County felt happy and hopeful that all the other animals that they had in their shelter would find their forever homes just like Petey.

Unfortunately, there are about 8 – 10 dogs in their shelter now, all waiting to find their forever homes.

“We’re rooting for them to find their people,” Ranlet said. “That’s what they deserve.”
