Lost dog unexpectedly comes back home with a third-place ribbon from dog show
Losing their beloved dog is perhaps one of the scariest moments that could ever happen to an owner.
The Closier family is no stranger to this feeling.
Just a couple of months ago, they lost their beagle mix named Bonnie who they thought ran away from home through an open gate.
Not only the Closiers but also their neighborhood in West Sussex, England ended up looking for Bonnie.
With hopes of improving their search, they also had the incident reported to the authorities, local vet offices, and animal shelters.
Thankfully, Bonnie landed on a pair of safe hands.
As fate would have it, John Wilmer saw Bonnie on the side of the road while he was on his way to a dog show in Surrey.
He was with his own two dogs and running late for the event, given the case, Wilmer decided to bring Bonnie to make sure the dog was safe.
In search of her owners, Wilmer decided to post a photo of Bonnie on his Facebook account. Fortunately, the Closiers saw the social media post and immediately reached out to him to get their dog back.
“I was in a bit of a rush to get there when we found Bonnie and put her in the car. I left a message on Facebook before taking her to the show,” Wilder told BBC.
Since it so happened that Wilmer was at a dog show anyway, he impulsively decided to enroll Bonnie in the “Best Rescue Dog” category of the competition.
“She was such a lovely dog, I thought it’d be good to enter her. I was so pleased she did so well,” Wilmer said.
Bonnie ended up winning third place!
On her way home, she brought herself a lovely rosette to commemorate her win.
“Bonnie was absolutely fine when she got back. She just thought she was having a great day out,” Peter Closier said.
The Closiers shared that they rescued Bonnie from the streets of Crete, Greece. The family said that Bonnie’s disappearance was an absolute disaster.
“We found her adventure lovely and funny,” Peter Closier told The Dodo. “[She’s] a free spirit. She’s lovely, never negative, tail always wagging.”
Because of what happened, the family even thought about having Bonnie join more competitions in the future.
“When she was missing, I had five different outcomes in my head, the best being that she came back,” dad Peter Closier told SWNS. “This was even better than that; she came back with a rosette.”
But for now, the Closiers are just beyond happy and thankful that Bonnie is back home.
“We were frantic as we live right by a main road. Bonnie used to be a street dog and we were so worried she wouldn’t have known to come back,” said Paula Closier. “She’s had such a full life. When John brought her back to us with a rosette we couldn’t believe it. It’s a shame she didn’t come first in the show. We’re so thrilled she’s safe and well and also a winner. You couldn’t make this stuff up.”
